Relocating: neighborhoods with a great sense of community?
My family may be potentially relocating to the area. We currently live in a neighborhood in the northeast with a great sense of community - folks walking around a lot, talking, chatting, a "main street" close by....and it is very racially diverse.
Are there any neighborhoods in the Triangle that might fit that bill? I don't need (or necessarily want) manicured lawns and large houses - crunchy is the preference!
(work commute would be to Research Triangle Park, 27709)

There are many neighborhoods here with a great sense of community. What is your price range?

That's easy. Carrboro, outside of Chapel Hill. About as crunchy as you can get.

That would be my pick, too. Or Duke Park. Carrboro is great but it doesn't make for the nicest commute to rtp.

price range: ideally $200K - $220K for a (small) 3bed/2bath - don't know if that is realistic or not...

I'd say take a look at Woodcroft in Durham
Not that I would call it "crunchy" but it definitely does not have the new uber-manicured look to it that I suspect you dislike.
Walking trails, mature trees, a mix of older (80s) and newer homes, racially diverse, and convenient to RTP.
You should have options in your price range.

Thanks for recommending my neighborhood, Sneezecake.
Deb, single-family homes in Woodcroft with 3 bedrooms and 2 & 1/2 baths start at about $200K. From here you can be at the western edge of RTP in 5 minutes. Just keep in mind that RTP is big so it could take 20 minutes to get to work if your office is in, say, the far eastern side of the Park. We have miles of paved walking trails here that get a lot of use throughout the day. I've never seen a study that shows how the neighborhood breaks down racially-speaking, but I feel I can say pretty confidently that we are pretty diverse. To meet the most people, definitely join The Woodcroft Club or one of the other neighborhood organizations like the Woodcroft Women's Club. A little over a year ago I posted some photos of Woodcroft & additional info in this thread: Pictures of Woodcroft, Durham? . The info on house prices has changed a bit, but most of the information there still holds true.
Hopefully some others out there can offer some more great ideas for you. Good luck!
