New to NC from Long Island.....Need help w/movers
Well our adventure should begin right after the holidays......I'm trying to get info on moving companies......not sure if we want to rent a large truck and drive it down ourselves and then hire out to help unload or just hire a moving company to handle it all.
I have no clue about this....the last time I moved was into this home 14 years ago and we only moved around the block and it was only me and my hubby so we rented a truck and did it ourselves..
We really dont have that much furniture......Living room sectional, 3 kids rooms w/beds and a dresser, 2 desks, master br w/ bed, dresser and end tables, dining room set 2/ 6 chairs, 2 small end table and 5 kit chairs....and a bunch of household stuff and clothes......my big pieces we are either leaving with the house or just getting rid of....
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated......we're thinking we should close right after new years so I want to figure this all out now...... So I'm basically looking for anyone who has recently made the move from long island or locally that may recommend someone they used
Thanks in advance......and I can't wait to finally get down there...

Movers that move you cross country charge by weight, not so much how much furniture. We moved this past January from LI to Clayton. We used Hall and Lane who is an agent for United. They were ok, a few things wound up damaged, but probably because we did all our own packing. We didnt have much furniture either, yet wound up moving hundreds of boxes and totalled about 8000lbs. They were a bit short on their initial estimate of our weight, so it wound up costing about $500 more than the initial estimate/charge and overall cost us about $5000 from what I can recall now. They did let us view the weighing of the truck. It also took about 7 days for our stuff to get here. Alot has to do with them also moving multiple people to fill up their cross country trucks, so its a matter of their scheduling to fill up a truck. We were aware of that possibility from the beginning. We had to plan around that fact up front (we ordered a bed for a spare bedroom down here for delivery our first day here that we could use until our own bed arrived with the movers). I personally wouldnt have considered moving our own stuff. Its a pretty brutal trip alone with ourselves and our 2 dogs, let alone driving a large truck with all our belongings. Anyways, hope this helps in your research. Good luck, closing on a LI sale is quite a feat these days I would imagine. Welcome to NC, hope all goes well.
P.S. - I would recommend calling at least several movers, get estimates and a feel for how they operate, check bbb to see if any recent complaints. Recommendations alone may not guarantee anything as time change things fairly quickly, especially given current economic conditions.

Yeah, its definitely alot to work out. You definitely will have alot of homes to choose from down here at this point. What area of Clayton are you looking at ?
We already had closed on our home in Clayton before we put our home on the market on LI. We felt we were lucky getting an offer 4 months after listing at that time (about this time last year) ... long story as we didnt plan to sell in LI when we bought the clayton home, but at some point got forced into it (we planned on renting until ready to move down).
My wife really didnt have a good feeling about any of the other movers we interviewed, so went with Hall and Lane, therefore, I wouldnt feel right mentioning the others to you. Hopefully, folks who have moved more recently from LI will chime in on their choices and experiences. You should defintely start getting estimates now. Some of them do get rather pushy, so stay your ground and leave your options open until your really sure. I'm sure it will be harder now given the current state of the economy, but you should get a pretty good deal.

yeh gotcha.....we are looking at Flowers Plantation over in the Pineville section, Glen Laurel and a friend of ours lives over in Taft woods...we have a couple of homes we want to check out again....we were down in august and 2 of the homes we really liked one that I really wanted and so did my husband sold 2 weeks after we left...
we didnt plan on making the move until the end of the school year but with the way the market is we put the house on thinking it would take some time and it didnt and they want to close fast so we're just going with the flow.....it will all work itself out I guess.....(I hope) I just worry about the kids having to start mid year but I guess others do it so they will be ok also.....I've never moved outside of west Islip moved 4 times but never left the town I grew up in until now.....
We're gonna get a bunch of quotes and see.......but we're doing it next week I'm trying to line everything up and know what we're in for ....lol
I can't wait to get back down there and atleast this time I know we'll be back real soon and for good.....
Where did you buy? where in long island did you come from if you dont mind me asking

Cool, those are really nice developments from what we've seen and heard. We came from Nesconset and bought in the Williams Point Subdivision where browning reality was building new homes. We wanted to be in the more rural part of Clayton and wanted a decent sized lot. Hopefully the farms and pastures stay for a bit longer. We're closer to smithfield and the new 70 bypass.
Good luck with everything and welcome to the neighborhood !

We used Bayshore Moving and Storage when we moved from Commack to Cary. Very reasonable and nothing broken. I woul recommended checking the Better Business Bureau with any mover you decide to use. I would not attempt to move myself such a long distance.

Suzanne,
I would never pay all that money for moving companies we always did ourselves too. But to move down here from NJ we used U-pack.com ABF trucking company. They give a free quote online and you only pay for what you use of the truck. They drop truck off I think we got ours on a Friday and we loaded it called them and they picked it up on Monday. I think they give you a time limit on how long you keep it or they charge extra but if you order it on the weekend they don't pick-up on sunday so you get the extra day. Three years ago we filled an entire tracter-trailer I think 28 ft. and paid 1100.00 I thought that was excellent. They called us when they were about two hours to their destination it took them about two days to get down here. I found it to be very convienent. Good luck with your move.

Thanks for all the responses....my husband is definately considering doing it ourselves.....maybe having someone help with the unload since we can get help here loading but wont know anyone to ask for help once we're there so I'm gonna check into the labor fees for unloading....
but please keep listing companies that were used.....I'm making a list and will be calling for info and quotes hopefully Monday......
