I think the glazes and clay used by potters in NC give NC pottery a unique look.

Now that is actually my style You want to see some crazy, unique and "wierd art", you should see my collection. I would post photos, but I have no idea how to get them on this site.
So, it seems pottery with a "folk art" theme is the in thing here?
I love art and probably way over spend on it, but it's what my wife and I enjoy. And actually when you look at art historically, it's not a bad investment. I have some very strange stuff from all round the world. You should see some of the expressions on the faces of people when they come and see my collection for the first time. but this is half the fun!

^^ You should check out the artists at artspace in downtown raleigh during the next "first friday" event. There are about local 30 artists with studios there. Some very interesting stuff and the artists are more than happy to explain their work. They usually have music, wine and a keg of beer (something along the lines of Yuengling). Not all of the art is paintings either. Below is a link to the website. The pictures on the website does not give you a good feel for what the place looks like. Think of a big 2-story warehouse divided into 30 studios with hardoowd floors. Definitely worth checking out on a Friday night.

In the PNW and the SW it's signature art comes from part of a tribal culture of it's Native American peoples. Here in NC the Native Americans were removed or decimated for the most part long before places like Arizona and Washington were truely settled.
I've seen distinguishable NC art in the form of quilts and folk art. And art is often times localized to what resources are prevelant in the region. In SE NC in the swamp areas craved myrtle wood is an art form. Also, an old art form is weaving baskets from pine needles (much more difficult than seagrass because of the short length of pine needles). In the mountains of NC there is it's own art genre. The Foxfire books touches on this some.
You will not find a symbol like the salmon commonly repeated across the state in it's art as you do in Seattle. But if you look at old art you will find symbols of similar elements.... tobacco, cotton, men seine fishing. 50 years from now all the "old art" will have pictures of U-haul trucks w/ license plates from West Coast states or Northeastern States.

There's an awesome festival every July 4th with a ton of regional artists. It's in Durham...the Festival for the Eno. Their website has a lot of links to some of the local artists that usually attend. I get my birthday gift there every year. www.enoriver.org You'll find all kids of folksy and unique artwork there.
You just missed the Seagrove Pottery Festival, it was last weekend. Face Jugs are very collectible, especially the old ones if you can get your hands on one. The glazes and clay NC potters use is unique to the area and dates back 200 years. Didn't you know the dirt in Carolina is better than anywhere else?

GarnerMama just said it in passing, but the jug NRG posted is generally called a "Face Jug." I've never heard it called "Folk Pottery." The one he posted looks like it has what I've heard described as "tobacco spit glaze." You can still find plenty of people making face jugs in the Seagrove Area.
Seagrove Area Potters Association NC - Official website of SAPA and Seagrove area pottery shops, stores, galleries, and studios around Moore, Montgomery, and Randolph Counties in North Carolina.
Seagrove Pottery
It's a nice tour to go from artist's studio to artist's studio.
Or try the Seagrove store at Cameron Village.
Here's a good article on face jugs: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl.../specialTravel

Pottery guys? Pottery aside from paintings are the most common form of art found anywhere in the world. It's done everywhere. Sure there might be a lot of it here, but is it specifically themed to NC? I'm looking for something that says...."NORTH CAROLINA" I suppose pottery could say this, but what theme is related to this area specifically.
|
You asked, they answered.
There is a specific type of pottery known as "North Carolina pottery" (in case you haven't noticed, we have a LOT of red clay here!
