When is the last time the Triangle saw some serious snow accumulation?
Just curious. I know it gets cold here during the winters, but I haven't seen more than a flurry of snow since moving here three years ago. I know about the ice storm of 2005, but when was the last time the area saw something like 6 inches or more of snow? Has the area ever seen snow like this!

The snow in that video looks about 2 feet deep...yes Raleigh has gotten snow that deep. In the blizzard of January 2000. There was 21 inches of accumulation OVERNIGHT at the airport, and in Cary it was measured as high as 27 (i know it was over 2 feet in Lochmere in Cary where we lived at that time). That night alone, Raleigh got more snow than the average ANNUAL snowfall of New York City. The last time the triangle had over 6 inches was February 2004....and that was from the EDGE of a storm that was centered around Salisbury/Asheboro where over 2 feet fell. There was about 6-10 inches of accumulation depending on where you were in Wake County from that storm.
Also, that was not an "ice storm" in 2005. That was a half inch of snow accumulation after a week of temps that never got out of the 20s...the snow solidified and compacted on the roads causing a massive 12 hour gridlock that gained national attention. The last major icestorms were in winter 2002-2003. The largest being in the first week of December 2002 when there was about an inch or more of ice accumulation and power was out for almost a week in some areas. Then on February 16th 2003 (i remember the date because it was the day we took my youngest son home from the hospital) there was another icestorm wtih about half an inch of accumulation.
It's not every year that the triangle area gets a major winter storm; but it's not something that people moving from northern areas should expect to never see again if they move there either!

I don't remember the '93 snow being that deep -- was that in eastern NC? The 2000 blizzard was nuts -- people were walking to the Harris Teeter over at Cameron Village looking shell-shocked -- very fun times!

LOL, that is the cutest video ever! That's what my dog would look like in that much snow only in the form of a mixed Cocker Spaniel.
Yes, we've had snow like that but WAY overdue! (for any really)

We had a Jack Ruseel Terrier at that time, and she couldn't keep her head above the snow, haha. Had to dig a little 3 by 3 plot for her outside the garage so she could use the bathroom. She would have been more incapacitated than that dog on the video.

I remember the snow of 2000! It was awesome. It was our first experience with cities allowing the snow to 'melt' before they allowed school back in...
My brother-in-law was visiting and he and my husband crafted a 'snow horse' out of that gorgeous snow. (note: I sent them outside to make a simple SNOWMAN)
I'll see if I can attach the picture here.
