Oh really? I have 3 friends that work at Cisco and they said that there was a hiring freeze. Perhaps I'll need to ping them again.

I just checked with someone who said he heard that they are hiring internally but not externally.

Well, my friend is in the second phase of his interview process (ie. he's done the in-person). He's external. His recruiter told him that he's part of a pool of 25 people, but Cisco will hire more than one candidate out of that pool if there is more than one "great fit". That doesn't seem like it meshes with a hiring freeze.

Hmm, that's interesting. Maybe there are certain positions of need that they are looking at externally.

Or it's possible that they just never notified the applicants that they're in a hiring freeze and put the kibosh on the whole thing! I'd like to think that they would have told them something like that though if that were the case.

It wouldn't be the first time a big company didn't shoot straight with job applicants.

There really are no jobs here in his exact field, so he's essentially looking as a career changer. Most of his co-workers are leaving the area. However, all of my family is here and we really want to stay! So NewUser, maybe you and my husband should start a brewery .

All kidding and beer nuts aside, it's the small, middle class grassroot businesses that will rise from this d/r-epressed economy.....adversity IS the mother of invention.....

He's applied to the universities, and will keep on applying. I too think he'd be happier in an academic setting. One day he'd like to go back to get his PhD, but it won't be where we're living now!

Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks.

You should look at city government job listings- google "city of _________" for all the cities in, around, within reasonable distance of, your target area and you might find something good. My hubby works for municipal government and enjoys it (and I must say, I enjoy the excellent health insurance ).

Great thread! I would like to relocate to the Raleigh/Durham area from New Hampshire. I am looking for a job as a database developer/application specialist. ERP and CRM Apps are my specialty. I have over 10 years of IT experience.
I have friends that live in Wilmington and I just recently drove down to visit them and explore the area. I am not looking for relocation assistance, although I certainly wouldn't turn it down, but no employer will even respond to my resume
