In that case, I strongly suggest you look at the Northwest area of Cary. It has a fantastic commute to RTP. My commute is only 12 minutes and there are some sections of Cary with an even shorter commute. Cary is also always rated as one of the safest places to live in America....something incredibly important when raising a family. The Western Wake County schools are extremely good, so you would not have the problem of have to try to avoid "some" of the sketchy schools in Durham.

OP, keep in mind that this person doesn't live in Durham and doesn't have children in Durham Public Schools. I personally like to talk with people who have first hand experience. Thus regardless of where you look at, contact the schools directly, and try to contact a parent group at the school such as the PTA. They will be able to give you a current snap shot of the school.

Also, I know you mentioned you are looking for diversity. IMO, you will find more racial diversity in Durham than in Western Wake County.
