Default Durham Photos: Trinity Park

Hi all: I was enjoying the beautiful weather yesterday and decided to take the opportunity to snap some photos of the Bull City. I've spread these out over a few different threads, by neighborhood or interest area.

First up: The desirable Trinity Park neigborhood, just to the west of downtown and the Brightleaf Square district.

George Watts Montessori Magnet -- a popular magnet school, and walking-district school for Trinity Park...

The western edge of Trinity Park, looking over Duke's East Campus

Trinity Heights, a recent redevelopment bordering Trinity Park

The intersection of Gregson and Trinity, a key point in the neighborhood

The view down Watts Street in the heart of the neighborhood (most photos are in this vicinity)

A beautiful historic home (note the real working gas lamp!)

A look down a cross street... note the beautiful old apartment building on the right (some Duke students, particularly grad students these days, rent in the neighborhood)

A Trinity Park home

Another one...

I love the roof tiles and little statuettes (gargoyles?) on this

Many of these houses have historic preservation society status with plaques on the front doors

Where are the garages? Down the alleyway, of course! Trinity Park, Watts-Hillandale and Duke Park all have blocks with alleyways for parking, garbage pick-up, etc.

Durham's North-South Greenway passes through the eastern portion of the neighborhood, along the Ellerbee Creek

One more photo...

Hah! No way... North_Raleigh_Guy's got me hands-down. I actually was out photographing for my blog anyway, so it's wasn't a far stretch to pick up some more images while I was at it. Glad to hear folks are liking these.

Trinity Park is considered a very safe neighborhood. With a total of 700 households in the neighborhood, of course crime happens from time to time (as you'd expect living in a city), but you see people out walking or biking to downtown, Brightleaf, Duke, Ninth Street, etc. day and night. The community is also very close-knit with an active neighborhood association (note -- not an HOA, but a voluntary dues-paying organization) that is influential in the city. Many families with kids live in TP, which is an excellent example of what successful urban neighborhoods can be.

Watts Street is the most picturesque part of TP and homes in the immediate vicinity range from the $400s to the high six figures. Other areas of TP (such as the northern portion where my wife and I live) have smaller, cottage/cape/bungalow homes with a mix of new in-fill construction that range from the upper $100s to the $400s.

Right now the big controversy in the neighborhood is a proposed condo project (The Chancellory at Trinity Park) that will take up an old empty parking lot between Brightleaf Square and Trinity Park. 48 condos would range from $300k to $1m. The design of the complex tries to fit in with the neighborhood but there is some concern about building heights on part of the complex; the N&O and its Durham News Saturday section have done a good job covering the conversation.

Beautiful homes! I enjoyed the pictures. The homes you photographed looked quite large, what are the average size of the homes?

Most of the houses seem to be in the 2,700-3,000 sq. ft. range in that part of the neighborhood. In the northern section, 1,200-1,800 sq. ft. seems to be more common.

Glad to hear folks are liking the photos.
