January 19th Is A Great Day For Those That Can't Stand Our Brutal Winter In The Triangle
Personally, I find winter in the Triangle to be a complete joke. Sure I love the warm weather, but winter in the Triangle isn't really winter. Come on, get real. But for those that still have a hard time with the temps, look what happens on January 19th. The temps start going up.

Huh? I don't get it... Maybe I'm just slow today, but I didn't see anything notable. Is it the day that the averages turn around and start heading up again?

Maybe the trend is that the temps very gradually go up. But some of the coldest days of the year are in February and when we have gotten a lot of our snow. I personally don't consider it getting much warmer until March.

The average temperature starts to "go down" the last week of July in summer too. That definitely doesn't mean that some of the hottest days all year aren't in August though!
Also, from that chart...it appears that the record low for January of -9 was actually after that "Warm up date", on the 21st

I tend to follow the self-weather forecast myself.
Each day I head out to work I go outside and say:
Dang its cold.
Boy it feels pretty nice.
Shoot its like a fry pay on high today.
There are various shades of precipitation thrown in those basic three. I always can mix and match them too!
So the date on the calendar is only to make appointments and special occasions IMHO!

Yeah, you know, as a native, I predict the "weather" here when I actually step outside each morning and gauge for myself! I keep an eye on LOCAL weather channels (don't trust weather.com or the weather channel to save my life) and swear by the weather bible of Greg Fischel. He's not always 100% right, but he understand the triangle's weird weather swings.
My kids ask me each morning..."what should I wear today?" and my answer is usually "step out on the fron porch and decide for yourself. Shove an umbrella and a jacket in your backpack just in case!"

Very true, but still "winter" here is a joke compared to the northern part of the country. Sure, there can be an extreme day here and there, but in my 3+ years here, I have been laughing all the way through the so called winter. I just wanted to point out the turning point in temps for those that seem to think we actually have a winter here.

I maybe reading your post wrong, but are you saying there is no winter in the triangle? I'm confused. Either the triangle has a winter, maybe not as cold as folks from the north are used to or the triangle doesn't have a winter. I don't know if there is a magical temp that must be hit for someone to say that an area has a winter but if there is a number I don't know it. All that I know and others that live in the triangle is that it gets cold during what someone would call "winter".
It doesn't "feel" like summer nor spring during the time some say is "winter" in the triangle.........I'm not talking about one or two weeks worth of "spring" like temps. I don't know! I'm so confused about the triangle not having what some would so proudly deem a "real" winter or any winter at all.
We've been hitting with ease mid 70s down here this whole week and on Christmas day it was 80. We awoke every morning that I've been down here to 60 degrees or better and by the time we eat breakfast and go outside around 11 its in the low 70s. It hit 77 yesterday down here. I'm just going to enjoy the 70 degree temps here where I'm at in FL while I can b/c I sure won't miss the 46 degree temp (as of this writing) in Derm (Durham) until I get back on Monday. Would 46 be considered winter? I don't know...............maybe not. I'm going to go outside now in my shorts, t-shirt and flips flops and enjoy the bright sun and 66 degree temps. Actually, I'll prolly wait until about 11am and go out b/c 66 is kind of cool and by 11 we'll be closer to that 80 degree high that we're supposed to get today and it'll be warmer.
Cheers,

I come from the northeast. A real winter there was bitterly cold. Walk outside and your lungs would just about freeze. No amount of clothing could keep you comfortable on many days. The winter here in NC is more of an "off time" from summer. In over 3 years, I have yet to wear a winter hat, gloves or a winter coat. I don't even know where they are anymore. This isn't a real winter. It's a pretend one.

Too hot or too cold? It is all in how YOU perceive it!
I put on a jacket when it is below freezing OR the wind is up. Other than that...I hardly notice the "cold".
I have a friend that walks around bundled up in a coat, scarf and gloves.
I don't own gloves!
See? Perception.
