I work in the field of Software Engineering, specifically with Flash, Flex, PHP, ASP, etc and I am wondering what the best companies to try and work for are. Could anyone share some insight with me?
If you want to move to this area, get a job. Any company in your field. You're always able to switch companies, jobs and careers at a later date. From what I've observed in the biotech field, and others have told me about the tech field (read: people newly laid off from IBS, Lunovo, Nortel, Sony, etc.), a person getting multiple offers is a rarity. It sounds like the saying "beggars can't be choosers" really does apply in these times of late.
But to answer your question, SAS seems to be extremely popular, and is often on the "Best companies to work for" list. People seem willing to kill to get in there. I have no idea if they fit your skill set, you lost me after flash.
I don't know that hiring freezes (despite how it sounds) means that a company is doing literally no hiring. Technically my company is under a hiring freeze as well, but we still have a couple of positions open. If you are under a hiring freeze, and someone leaves the company who held an essential position that cannot be filled internally, an external hire will still be brought in.
You may want to look at outsourced tech companies. Players like IBM, Lenovo, SAS etc. are still using contracted employees to get stuff done and when it comes time to hire, they look directly at those contractors since they have already been doing the work anyways. My suggestion is to find an IT recruiting company with long term contracts with larger companies and get in there through that method. There are WAY more tech employees than positions but not everyone is willing to work contract. It's a necessity to be flexible in this economy. Good luck!
