which is better north west or north east raleigh?
I am relocating to raleigh this summer with my husband and 3 kids under 6 from nyc. We are in our 20's and live in an urban neighborhood. We are looking for a subdivision close to shopping and schools. Also one with a pool, playground, and sidewalks if possible. We were down in December and looked at long lake, wyngate, and harrington grove. Which all met our needs. But since than i've been wondering how the north east area is like wakefield or bedford. i'd really like to be in a subdivision with it all almost like a town of its own. any ideas or suggestions would be great. we have price point up 350,000 commute time is not a problem because we work from home, but we would like to be within a half hour drive of the airport. The most important things are good schools and being close to recreational things for the kids.

I think the places you have already checked out are nice. Based on what you described you are looking for I would also take a look at Bedford as well. Here I a post I made a while back with various pictures of Bedford including soem pictures of retail space being built within the community with an expected completion date of Spring 2009. I live next to Bedford and it definitely feels like a town in itself. The traffic on Falls of Neuse can be a drag during rush hours but you wouln't have that problem if you work from home. Good Luck!

I prefer the NW side of Raleigh only because I find it a more central location to the rest of the triangle.

FWIW, I don't think the Bedford / Wakefield area is really what is considered "North East" Raleigh. In my mind North East Raleigh is everything East of Capital Boulevard.
Northwest Raleigh and the North Raleigh Area around Falls of Neuse Road are both nice areas in my opinion. Which one you may find to be best will likely depend on your situation. For people looking to work in RTP I think North West Raleigh has the advantage since it is closer to that area. On the other hand you are also closer to the airport and will need to take a look at air traffic noise if that is a consideration for you.
Both are great places in the end.

At up to 350,000 and wanting shopping, I would be looking along Creedmoor Road.
Stonehenge comes to mind immediately.

north east for shopping. triangle town center has lots of development all around. northwest will get above 350k quick; but mainly because its a better location for rtp commuting. I would suggest bedford, riverside and anything else on durant rd.

NW Raleigh also has less crime than just about any area in NE Raleigh. It's more expensive, because it's closer to RTP, the airport, and has some of the lowest crime rates in the city, if not the lowest.

Go for NW! Brier creek and Triangle town shopping centers w/in easy 5-10 min drive. Watchout for a lot of airplane noise in harrington grove. You might look into stonehenge too (creedmor rd near 540)- great quiet neighborhood. But easy access to rtp and downtown too!
