And then when I woke up Monday morning I remember looking out the window and telling my husband it was the highest 3 to 5 inches I had ever seen. My younger one was 4 at the time and the snow was up to his chest. It was his first real snow storm (if you don't count the one the day after he was born). Of course I will always remember that snowstorm too -- it came a day after my son was born and I got to spend some extra time at Durham Regional because my New Englander husband could come get me. We were new to NC then so I couldn't understand how a New Englander couldn't drive in snow ......... I've since learned.
Funny...the icestorm of February 2003 (minor compared to the major one 2 months early in December 2002) happened the day after my son was born when we were bringing him home from Western Wake!

Lots of responses! My daughter is three, so this would be her first significant snowfall. I don't want to be stuck inside for days on end. I just want enough for her to go outside and play for a bit - at least make a decent snowball. I just read that Greensboro is seeing flurries. As I drove home about an hour ago (I-540 from Knightdale to NE Raleigh) a cold rain began. We'll see...

The 20 inch snow was NOT "9 years ago today" (Jan 19/20), it was on Jan 24/25th (2000).

I was living right in this same house, but we are within walking distance of 540, which though cut through and graded, was not paved yet. We had fun walking out on what would soon be "the Outer Loop" through the snow that came up past our knees!

Was it 9 years ago today that the first snow of that especially snowy season fell...around 3-5 inches? I remember we had already had a couple decent snowfalls before the monster 2 footer storm that year too. The only winter where there was actually snow on the ground for the better part of January and February. Very very unusual..but clearly that year..possible.

YES, I'd already made that correction. I was a few days off. The ice that paralyzed the city was on that day in 2005.

Friends and I spent the whole night building an igloo in my front yard that seated 6. I wish I had pics, it was quite amazing (and structurally sound! lol). It was roughly 10' in diameter with built in snow-pack seating benches and drink holders.

Sounds like something my son and his friends did. The "snow storm of the century" kept us homebound for 3 days. As we ran out of milk, bread and the all important beer for the guys, three of the fellas decided to try to get to the nearest store--about only about 5 miles away but having to go on 40. Took about an hr in a 4 wheel drive! It was an adventure!
