Franklinton?
Hi, I just joined here a few days ago and am finding all of the information you all are sharing just wonderful. I have this dream of one day (hopefully within the next year) relocating to NC (we currently live in Front Royal, VA, about 70miles west of DC) hopefully somewhere in the Raleigh area. Of course this all depends on talking hubby into it and him being able to find a job....just a couple of minor problems, hehe. Anyway, been looking at some realtor websites and have seem some nice homes in the Franklinton area. Just wondering if anyone can share any info. on the town...population, proximaty to shopping, private schools, ect. I understand it's a very small town so I already know there would be some driving involved to get to shopping, restaurants ect. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Deb

reply regarding questions on relo to NC
My family & I relocated from Indiana about 45 days ago. We moved from Valparaiso Indiana. We had our hearts set on building our custom home in Franklinton NC & being very happy. We had custom plans, the perfect builder to do so & money down on the lot etc.. I had researced the school system because our son is in the 7th grade. By phone, on the web, & in person. All checked out fine. We prepared for 1 year & 6 months for this move. We made weekend trips (no short drive) just to check on things. Our house up north finally sold & we were off. Once we arrived we noticed that our soon to be neighborhood was pretty much vacant. $400-600,000 homes empty, the management offices running only 2 days/wk. Come to find out, the market had hit this area hard & people had backed out of their deals, also some of the builders went bankrupt & stopped construction completely in the middle of building. It sure is a shame! Now the second problem & to me the worst of all! The first day of school my son was very angry that we put him in such a "horrible place". Now let me explain, we have moved often & have lived several states, he has never complained about any school before. He was made to "tuck his sweatshirt in his pants & was patted down" when he asked what was going on he was told they have a "big problem with weapons, drugs, alcohol, & gangs". I immediately looked into this situation & they stated all was correct (they left that detail out on the phone etc). Because of all these factors we were moved out of Franklinton & into Raleigh within the week, all our moneys returned. Scary situation! We are very happy in Raleigh!
Also, to get to civilization from Franklinton it is a 45-60 min. (not fun) drive! If you have children, Wake County schools are said to be the best. And my son is very happy now.

Franklinton IS very rural. Yet, I have sold a few homes there to those that want more house and more LAND for their money; however it is RURAL (yes, I realized I said that twice).
But from the poster's experience with schools, this makes me want to say this again...the scores of our area schools DO NOT tell you everything. As a parent, I have had my kids in some of the top rated schools and had some issues and now, my youngest is at Sanderson High School (which doesn't have the top scores) but is the BEST, in my opinion. I base that on the fact that many of her teachers are the SAME teachers that taught my other kids...8 years ago!
If your child's school is that important to you (as it should be), please do not rely on just the scores. VISIT THE SCHOOL. Your feelings will tell you much more than any score will.
Vicki

We bought a home in Franklinton in Granville County (not Franklin county) and are glad we did. Our son attends Wilton Elementary and it is a wonderful school. We sold our home in Wake County a few months back to move to Granville County after our disappointment in the WCSS.
I am 12 miles from the Super Target in Wake Forest, 10 miles from the Walmart in Oxford, and 2 miles from my child's school - being 2 miles from my child's school was the most important thing for me. All the mileage works out as far as I am concerned. We've always lived more rural as we like space and homes seem to be cheaper. We bought a modest home on an acre in a nice subdivision. We are VERY happy here!
I agree with Vicki R that you have to check out schools in person since we all want and need different things for our families. Feel free to DM me if you are wanting more specific info.

It depends where you are in Franklinton. I live in Franklinton in Granville County and it is much closer to everything. My husband commutes from our home to the RBC center in 35 minutes.
Maybe Wake County schools are "said to be the best" but that did not come true in the 2 years we spent attending them. For you, it sounds like it was the perfect fit!!

We finally sold our home in Raleigh and are moving up to Franklinton within the month. It's not that far from civilization and for the space and peace and breathing room, it's well worth a drive to get to the ballet, or the museums, or the really fancy good restaurants you might like further toward downtown. Our in-laws have lived in Franklinton for a couple years now and we are back and forth all the time. If you are a little bit more country than rock & roll, it's worth checking to see if Franklinton might be for you, too.
