Why Raleigh? If you have no job or any one to support you could go any where. Raleigh is not exactly the place I would consider top of the list if im single and young. Its not tropical here, cost of livivng compared to earnings is almost like any other place. Most that did come here or wanted to were Families with kids trying to find a way to survive. Kinda was the soccer mom minivan capital so to speak. So why single and Raleigh?

I agree, except that I think the triange has a high cost to earnings ratio. The pay for someone starting a career (or starting over) is very low compared to the cost of living .
It seems that it's the people who have large nest eggs that find it to be so affordable.

I am thinking about Raleigh for a few reasons:

1) It's 4 hours from where I live now and also 4 hours from my parents. I want something bigger, but not too big (ie Atlanta). I want to be able to get to my friends and family in under a day drive, which is definitely possible.

2) I really enjoy the vibe there. Compared to where I am now which has the mindset of "let's all be like each other", Raleigh seems to be much more "Let's all be ourselves". This is just the impression I got from visiting in September and December.

3) I'll be 24 in May and I'm an old soul. I'm not looking for night life, partying, or any of that. I want somewhere more progressive than where I am now with established, professional people. Hopefully in a few years I'll be joining the ranks of soccer mom.... ok, I'll work on getting a husband first. =)

4) I'm not 100% saying Raleigh is where I'll be. I'm in the process of signing a lease for a place I've been eyeballing since September, but was told never opens up.... well, one unit is opening in- you guessed it- May. If I get a job offer I can't refuse, I will lose a $200 holding fee, which isn't going to be the end of the world. What I figure it, if I don't get that job offer I can't refuse, I'll come there because that's where I really want to be. I've been (and still will be) applying to places all over, but no takers yet. Maybe closer to May. And hopefully in Raleigh! =)

And as a side note, I have considered nannying or working for a daycare when I move because I have so much experience with it. However, it seems that all the daycares require "credentials 1 and 2" which I don't have/ aren't required where I am now... and I'm definitely not doing any more schooling to get them. This master's was expensive enough! =)

If you are interested in providing mental health therapy and can be licensed in the field you will find work quickly. Try Craigslist, I found work there.

Thanks for all the advice.... I've got some major thinking to do. The reason I'm leaning towards going on ahead and coming is because there are even less jobs where I'm at now and my lease is up at the end of May when I graduate. Thanks again!
Dont freak out ... what you are hearing most of are worst case scenario types. Yes, retail places are closing, but did anyone know that a brand new HHGregg is opening up within the next month.

Jobs are still needed, people are still needed to work restaurant jobs and retail jobs no matter what the economy is like. I got here two weeks ago and am finding it alot easier to get the type of work you are talking about looking for than my last place.

You will find two part time jobs in a six month time frame unless you just arent trying hare enough.

From your response I would say give it a shot. It wont be easy and Im not saying its a good idea, but at least you seem to know what you want and should go for it. Not based on what 90% move here for but more personal reasons. Good luck.

Count me in the "don't move here" camp, for everyone's sake. Not sure where you got the "Let's all be ourselves" vibe, but I wouldn't say that's the area's strong suit. It's not close-minded, but it's fairly homogeneous. So for your sake, I'd say that a 24 year old, broke, and unemployed person wouldn't exactly find this place to be the ideal choice. And for our sake, we really don't need another unemployed person moving into the area. We have plenty now, thanks. I know that sounds harsh, but that's the way a lot of us feel. We don't really want our unemployment numbers pushed higher by people moving in here.
