yes, go to a nearby small town. Every Raleigh/Cary/Durham/Westgate post office is crazy busy. We used Angier for my girls' 1st passports last year - they are great. I think Wendell (even more convenient) was named as a location too.

Applying for a U S Passport

I don't know if they have a backup, but the Orange County site says you need to call for an appointment:

"Hours of Passport Acceptance (Appointments are required) Monday through Friday (except holidays) 8:30-11:30am & 2:00 -3:30pm

YOU MAY CALL 919-245-2681 TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT"

Person County - Roxboro may have been another place I found with no appointment required.
I was getting my passport last summer and had to hunt around to find a place to get in right away to
speed things up for a trip.

We had an awesome experience at the Willow springs post office. We made our appointment via phone. Showed up at our set time. There was a family being processed before us. There was a young guy waiting to mail a package behind us and we suggested she process him since we would be longer than him. The clerk thanked us and he thanked us. We had a fun and lively conversation through out our brief five minute process. Off we went and our passports arrived within two weeks.

This is correct. I was at the RTP post office today and there was a sign indicating to go to the Superior Court Clerk Person County Office at 105 S Main St Roxboro, NC for walk-in passport application.
