Hello, my fiancee and I will be relocating from NYC to NC. We love Chapel Hill area and checked out the Governor's Club and Jordan Lake as well as some cool places in SW Durham but the commute is just too far to Greensboro.
Any suggestions for a very nice community (early 30's no kids but soon) which won't have my future husband driving too too much?
Good question. I live in Churton Grove and find it nice. It is not nearly the luxury neighborhood that some other subdivisions are, like Governors Club. But, I decided against Governors Club as I have heard very bad things about that place - being VERY pretentious and not kid friendly (most residents are not in their 30s with kids). I really like the gated aspect of Governors Club, but after speaking with several people who currently or use to live there, I made the right choice to stay away.
If you are not looking for the typical ameneties (pool, tennis, etc.) there are several small neighborhoods around Hillsborough with larger lots (5-10 acres) - walnut farm, fox hill farm, etc.
Also, if you like golf, briar chapel in Pittsboro is nice and relatively close to G'boro (55 miles, if you can take that).
I would look at the Grandover area in Greensboro, or north of the city, including Summerfield, some of the neighborhoods off 150/158. Why is Greensboro not an option? It has lots of great restaurants and decent social life. Even though South and East are not great and unemployment is high, its a nice city. I've lived in CH/Carrboro and Greensboro and found them both nice.
Chapel Hill is 45 min away, so you could look there, near Pittsboro, Fearrington... or go off towards Winston Salem or Salisbury...
