I know a lot of the men who helped battle that fire in 1962, and remember their first hand accounts of that early morning. Here's an interesting photo of just that.

Great pic Poggly. Thanks. It looks like that picture was taken from Whitaker Mill Rd. The house(actually the roof of a house) in the right hand corner of the picture appears to be where the Audio Buys store sits today. Can you confirm. I was born in 1966, so I am not old enough to remember. I have heard a lot of folks talk about that fire over the years.

Jfre81, Is this what winter typically looks like in Raleigh? Do you get much more snow than that? I have been living in MT pretty much all my life and winter lasts 4 months here and there are times when we will get 10 inches in less than 8 hours. I am really wanting to go somewhere where the snow is VERY minimal.

You can go a few years in Raleigh without ever seeing a flake of snow. In other years, you could get 1-3 snow "events". Most of them will be really minor dustings or a few inches that melt in a day or so. On rarer occasions, you can get blasted with a real snow event of 6 inches or more that lasts a few days to a week.
In yet other years, you might get a freezing rain event or sleet.
But...in the end, one doesn't think of frozen precipitation as a regular event in Raleigh.

Those last two photos can't be Pullen Park. Are you sure those aren't really Umstead Park?

Sorry I missed this. That was the biggest snow I saw there, but I was only there from December '05 to January '07. That was about two weeks before I left. Mind, I lived just across the line in Johnston County and I can't speak for what Raleigh proper got that day. If there was anything frozen coming out of the sky I stayed put.
I'd like to come back and check out Downtown Raleigh. But not during an ice storm (those are more common there)

Another thing to remember...even if we get snow...it only lasts for a few days max before it melts.
Yes, you will see snow here. You might even have snow more then once in a winter, but it's still minimal.
