Theft of GPS systems from cars has risen dramatically in Raleigh very recently.

So if you live, work, or visit here, be sure to remove your GPS when you leave the car -- or put the GPS out of sight. Be especially careful at shopping center/restaurant/mall parking lots.

good advice. i had my car busted into in front of the Costco in Durham last December. it was the one and only time i forgot to take the GPS off the dash. they also got my iPod.

also, it wouldn't hurt to eliminate your home address from the system. once they have the GPS and know you won't be home for a bit.....

Mike

Also be alert to what's happening around you when you are in any parking lot. If you see someone walking around in a way that looks like he lost his car, and then he happens to look in a few car windows, call 911 immediately. The thieves are getting quite brazen.

Thanks for pointing this thing out. I usually take the GPS device with me when I get out of the car so that I can use it to find an address while going back or I hide it in the car. Sometimes I do forget to take it off the wind shield but your post will remind me to take GPS with me or hide it.

Hope people just read this thread and remember this instead of spoiling it by showing their extra ordinary common sense!!!!

A coworker of mine had his GPS stolen out of his car in the parking lot at work in the middle of the day!

Good reminder. The other problem is that even if you remove the GPS people can see the mark on the windshield where the GPS was placed. They may still break in, whether it's "hidden" in the car or in the house, causing damage. In desperate times, people are more brazen, as someone already said.

And what's with all the GPSs anyways? Every other car has one nowadays. Did people suddenly forget how to drive to work, get home, or get to the grocery store?

We don't use a suction mount. We use an after-market dash mount that's basically a big bean bag, works great, leaves no little circle on the windshield (made by Garmin, about $27, highly recommended).

And we have a GPS because my husband has no sense of direction and because it is very useful when we go out of town.

Great advise! I am waiting for the model that can find its way back home in case it is stolen or lost! That will be a great seller! I hear they are close but have a few software bugs to work out.....it tends to run away if it does not like its current owner. Hmmmmm.... Happy Friday!

The other tip I've heard, and I think this is a very good one, is to reprogram your 'home' address to be something close, but not right at your home. That way if your GPS is stolen the thieves won't be directed right to your house. Pick a store or an intersection or something near your home but not showing the exact location of your home.

Here's a scam I heard of recently. Can't vouch for it's truthfulness.

Thieves are breaking into cars at sporting events and stealing GPS units. They use them to navigate "home" for whomever is at the game. Knowing the owners will be occupied and away for the duration of the game, they use that time to rob the home.
