I have a thread going similar to this. My wife and I are coming down in May to check out areas within 30-45 minutes max from RTP. We have been cruising the realty sites, and this part of Raleigh (27606 zip code, I believe) looks quite appealing, especially with respect to lot size and proximity to prospective employment.
What still has us concerned is the Wake County school thing. Would we have to worry about redistricting and year-round schedules in this part of Wake County?

No one can tell you that it will not be a factor.

There's plenty of options in the southwest corner of Durham, in the rural buffer area of Chapel Hill. The Duke forest has numerous homes with acre lots that will be in your price range should they come up for sale. This area is west of academy, north of cornwallis. There will also be numerous acre lot properties west of 15-501 out towards the orange county border. Then moving into orange county, the area north of I-40 has tons of homes with acre plus lots in the Chapel Hill School district (StoneRidge is a subdivision of note, several houses in the 2000 sqft range under 350K have come and gone in the last few months, although none for sale at the moment), and hundreds just north of that into the orange county school district. All this area is Chapel Hill rural buffer, has no water service so everyone is on well/septic, and so by necessity most all lots are going to be over an acre. And is within minutes of I-40.

The chickens are actually just kind of my litmus test for an area, I'm not even sure I'm going to have some (the garden, however, is certain). Although reading the article recently about chickens in Raleigh and Durham, I think I'd probably be ok with them just about anywhere (just not Cary, right? ).

That's so funny...when my DH & I moved here, he wanted a front porch, and I wanted to have chickens! Guess what...neither of us got what we wanted...ended up in a great subdivision with a great house that we love, but had to give up something. I might suggest one subdivision...Saddle Run in Fuquay Varina...its a little over your commute limit, a little under your price limit, but has everything else...except possibly the chickens. They are much less restrictive than our subdiv on pretty much everything.
