After the death of our 17 year old Bichon, we found a 4 year old Bichon, perfectly behaved and healthy from a rescue group. I was quite pleased to pay the $100 fee especially after I visited the home and saw this 55 year old postal carrier had taken in about 15 dogs for rescue. Be sure to confirm this is a real rescue group and not somebody dealing with stolen dogs. There are organizations and procedures to certify. My dog had her papers and health history and had been turned in only 1 day previous.

Rescues aren't for everyone. We considered rescuing a Bichon as a playmate for our other Bichon, but Bichon rescues will rarely allow you to adopt a Bichon if you have small children. We ended up finding an excellent breeder (very high quality--in fact she owns the 2001 Westminster Best in Breed for this particular breed) for the breed we ultimately went with (a relative of the Bichon). One advantage IMO of a high quality breeder is that you have a higher probability of getting a healthy dog (which was very important to us after several surgeries and thousands of dollars of vet bills on our relatively young Bichon).

As far as finding a good breeder, I would ask lots of questions. Our breeder would not allow us to purchase a dog from her if there was not an adult at home during the day (because she knew this breed would be miserable alone all day) and made us sign a contract saying that if for some reason we could not keep the dog it would be returned to her--I think that's pretty standard for a good breeder. Of course I've also run into some extremes (e.g., a breeeder that wanted to make regular home visits to make sure the dog was okay).

Good luck. Papillons are such fun dogs.

I'll put it this way and leave it alone, there are way too many dogs being put to sleep every day for anyone to ever by a dog from a breeder.

Hello! We will be breeding our Papillon Bella next year. She is AKC registered, sable and white and perfect markings. She also has all the specifications of a champion! I haven't seen one as good looking as her since we got her. The breeder we got her from retired her mom from breeding. She came from a cage free, spoiled rotten family and is in the same kind of family now . She is SOOOo incredibly smart and such a good listener! I can't believe we got so lucky finding her. Her puppies will be gorgeous! If you're interested I can send you pictures and keep you updated. We are currently looking for a male but we are very picky and its been hard looking for one that's as good looking as our Bella. Her pedegree is emaculate. My email address is Corrievaneyk@gmail.com

Thank you for posting Cvaneyk! We found a great breeder in North Carolina recommended by another member on this forum. We have a wonderful little boy named Bodee. He is a real sweetheart! He is a tri-colored papillon full of energy and love. He is 19 weeks old. He is in love with our other older 12 year old pomeranian. It was a real fit for us! I really appreciate you posting. It sounds like you have a beautiful girl!

You mention that she has all the specifications of a champion, and I was curious who noted that for you? Did you have her evaluated by a judge? Has she been shown? Has she been CERF, and OFA tested?

It's wonderful that she is a good looking dog, but there is much more to looks when deciding on if a dog is worthy of being bred. Good breeders will always do health testing, so that would be something I would think about if you have not already. In looking for a stud, you should be looking for someone who has done the same with their dog since you will be introducing another line into the mix.

We had Bella checked out by a friend of ours who is in charge of a lot of dog shows around the area. She just checked out her markings and measurements to decide though we don't have a certificate. We would love to put her in shows but its so expensive!

Thanks for that link livesintriangle! I'll check that out.

So glad you found one hollyspringgirl! Its hard to find a good breeder around here.

I personally know JimJac Papillons. They are WONDERFUL!!!! They really care about their dogs, love them to pieces, and look for exceptional, special homes for the ones they sell. THEY ARE NOT A PUPPYMILL!!!! That beings said, anyone looking for a papillon, wanting one that has great temperment, great personality, show quality, and is beautiful should go there. They do not have a website currently, but it is being worked on at this very moment and will hopefully be up and running soon. That being said, good luck on your search!!!!!

I thought advertising wasn't allowed on city-data. (Our purebred small dog was rescued from a puppy mill.)
