We are in Raleigh and have TWC phone/cable/internet. I haven't noticed a drop in connection, although it's service has been slow - I'm assuming it's heavy traffic. Our DVR box has been going out and I've had to reboot it. When I lived in CA I was on the computer all day long and noticed dropped connections all the time - at least once a day. We had cable there too. The provider said it was due to heavy traffic at certain times of the day. Not enough bandwith or something like that.

I do computer support here in the triangle. If you have Time Warner Modem, from your address bar type in 192.168.100.1 that will bring you to a internal diagnostic page from your modem. Make a note of the values on the right column, then click on the tab marked signal. Also make a note of those values. Next time you can't connect to the internet, go back to these pages and see if the values have changed. If so most likely its TW. If the values have NOT changed, it's your computer. If you can't connect to the modem, then look at the status lights, if the connected online light is steady, and you can't connect it's a problem with your computer. I hope this helps.

I've had problems for days now....periods of no phone or internet(cable TV OK). I flagged an installer down this morning and after checking around he determined the problem to be a weak signal off the lines over the street. Time Warner was in my neighborhood all day yesterday, so I'm still a little skeptical. Anyway, a work order is in. We'll see

A few things:
1) how old is the drop to your house and do you have any splitters? The weaker the signal into the modem the worse off you are. If your house is old the drop might be old, but getting anyone out to check the signal at the end of the drop is like pulling teeth. I would start by looking at the wiring in the house, look for loose connectors and look for splitters. Best setup is a two way splitter from the drop, one line going to the modem and the other feeding your video in the house.
2) If you have residential service think about switching to business class. The customer support difference is like night and day. You will pay more but you can say "this is a business" vs "this is my home".

My place is about five years old, and I have no splitters (at least none coming from the jack). I'm wired in straight from the jack for TV and for the modem. I had considered the business class, but I hate to give them more money if the service will still be problematic. But, thanks for the advice.
Thanks also to everyone else for the input. This has been helpful.

There is alot of good advice in this thread. This may not help your current problem, but if you don't already have you router and cable modem connected to a UPS (battery backup), I would suggest doing so. They are commonly on sale in best buy or staples. You dont need a very high capacity one for these 2 things. It should help if your getting power surges and dips to keep them both with steady power supply.
