Hello,
I'm looking to attend grad school at UNC and I wanted to know if anyone can provide insight on public elementary schools that provide good support for my 3rd (will be 4th) grader. He's currently in a full inclusion classroom and does well, the teacher is well trained in special ed and there is an intervention specialist who provides classroom assistance to ALL the kids in the classroom, not just those with extra needs.
I want a smaller school that has a nurturing environment and provides support for kids on the spectrum. Any advice on how to navigate the school system is appreciated. I'm coming from Ohio, so this will be a whole new world for me.

Chapel Hill has two school systems, one is chapel hill carrboro city schools and the other is orange county schools. The city school system has an excellent reputation, is very academically competitive, but from what I have heard from my friends in the school also is successful with children with special needs. Orange county schools are also very good, they are not funded as well as the city schools, and I do not have any direct knowledge of their dealing with IEP or special needs students.

UNC does have the TEEACH program, and here is a link to the chapel hill office:
Chapel Hill TEACCH Center (http://www.teacch.com/regionalcenters/chapelhill/welcome.html - broken link)

By law the schools will have an IEP in place, but as you know, some schools are better able to accommodate the students needs in the most productive and supportive way for the student.

I would call the chapel hill carrboro schools and see what you can find out on that end, contact Teeach, and see about joining trianglemommies which is a great group of mom's who know a lot about many things in the area! There is a forum for moms with children with special needs (you have to request to join it because it is a private forum), but those moms would probably also have some insight to the schools.

Good luck

Leigh

I have a child with a mild case of autism and it has been my experience that when the county provides services you are at the mercy of whichever school they decide your child will attend. My child has received pretty good care from the county however I decided to include private care and both combined seem to be paying off. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will look into TEACH and I have heard good things about Chapel Hill schools so I'll investigate some more.
