Consider doing it yourself. It's not that hard, get the tint your want from WalMart, learn how to apply it right (not what's listed on the package), peel it off if hassled by anyone (would take all of 5 seconds to remove, but cannot re-apply).
Needed: Scissors; 2 people to apply large sections; credit card to scrape out bubbles; spray bottle; 2 drops dish soap; an hour.

Here's the reverse question. I've got a car with tint on it, but while it is nice, I don't really care that much. If it fails inspection, is it difficult to take off?

Let me rephrase that -- I took it in to get inspected, the guy used a light meter, and it was clear that it wouldn't pass. So, where should I go to get it taken off?

Well, to follow-up for the third time, I wen to another inspection site and they didn't say boo. It's not triple-black ultra dark, mind you, but they didn't seem to care. So I'm good to go for now.

where did you go
Hi,
I have a similar problem with my car. Could you let me know where you went to get the inspection done? Thanks!

Auto Window Tinting
There's a new shop in Cary and the owner used to work at Formula One for 3 years and has recently opened his own shop. He does great work and you can reach him at 345-1466. The name of the company is Tinted Atmospheres. Give him a call and he'll answer any questions you have and he knows all about the legalities of the tint. It will filter out 98 - 99% of the UV rays, which I would think all parents would be interested in for those kiddies riding in the back seat! We put sunscreen on the kids outside, but not very many people are thinking about the sun that comes through our windows while driving the kids around. Hmmmm . . . maybe more parents should think about doing this. And - just because some of the newer cars come with darker windows in the back, it doesn't mean that they are tinted, it just means they are colored glass. It only takes 2-3 hours to get a car tinted - usually - and the cost ranges from around $170 to $260. Hope this information has been helpful!

My that sounds like a hard sell... I thought car windows already blocked UV rays?

This time of the year is very slow for window tint shops, especially new ones just starting out. To answer your question on the UV. Glass itself does block out some UV but only about 40%. That's why your left arm gets tan when your right arm does not after you have been driving for a long period of time.

Weird. I have my windows tinted and everything, but I just thought it was to look cool and help make the car not so hot when you get in on a sunny day. You learn something new every day.
Anyway, I had the tint done at Colortyme Custom Wheels in Durham. Good job, reasonable price.
