Default Question about this board

Now I am a rare poster but I often read the posts. In every post where someone asks advice about moving here, eg. where to live, schools, etc. sdomeone undoubtedly says, Make sure you have a job when you come or Are you employed? Don't you think that is sort of insulting? I mean all (or most) of the people posting here are adults, many with families. Don't you think they already thought of that? It always annoys me when I read it. What do you think?

Not really, because unemployed people move here all the time thinking they will find jobs once they come. NC unemployment rate has recently skyrocketed, but until recently, it was still being touted as this wonderful place where jobs were plentiful and easy to find.
It's just a warning to people who might still think that, not an insult.

I understand the REASON that some say that but I also find it somewhat annoying!

Speaking of annoying...I have been on this forum for a few years now. Whenever a new poster comes along and asks a question, I find it annoying when people suggest to them that this question has already been asked and answered numerous times.

Well, since they are new to the forum, they don't know this.

I prefer to try to help by answering the question and then suggesting that they do a search for "whatever the subject is" and they will find more info. by that route. Most new folks don't even know there is a search.

If you are annoyed by such things, perhaps it is time to move on. This forum is here to HELP others.

Vicki

Well, I think the people that are placing those posts are either frustrated b/c they have just lost their job, frustrated b/c they're having trouble finding a job, or are concerned about the growth of the area, and they're trying to chase people off.

Because those people think that, by dispensing their advice on an internet message board with a readership of like 100 people, they can have some sort of statistically significant influence on either the number of people moving here, or the unemployment rate.

With you 100% on that. Some people need to not be so harsh on newbies and stop treating this board like some sort of opinion forum country club.

For the last fifteen year or so, NC has been the Promised Land for people, especially those from the cold Northeast.

There are lots of people there who have always thought about moving to NC. Now that they have suffered layoffs or decreased employment opportunities, they're thinking, "This is the time to do it!"

The recent downturn and resulting high unemployment rates are a relatively new phenomenon. Many people do not realize NC now has the sixth highest unemployment rate in the country; that news came out LAST WEEK.

Many people think (because it has been true for SO long) they can come here and quickly find a job; if not the job of their dreams, they think they can find an hourly paid job until they find one. They don't realize that even lower-paid jobs are difficult to find and (recently) people with higher education and more work experience are applying for them in droves.

NC has always been "the better place to go." It isn't anymore, and not everyone knows that because it is NEW information.

No one is "chasing" anyone away. Come on down! It's a free country. Just know what you're getting yourself into.
