Again, stupid rant. You've been warned. I just can't believe this.

I have been looking for a house to rent. And looking. And looking. Cary, parts of Raleigh (not nearer the city), M-ville, Apex, even Wake Forest. That's a pretty broad area with tons of houses. Now I don't ask for tons of acres - hell 1/4 acre or so would do (ideally maybe a bit more). Or even a slightly smaller yard if it had a "buffer" of trees/woods/etc in the back. I just want a little breathing room. But the only ones that don't have ridiculously tiny yards are the older areas, which frankly in most cases (that I've seen anyway and I've driven around a lot) are somewhat run-down or generally "funky" looking neighborhoods (lot of wire fences, odd landscaping, kids toys in the yard etc). And even a fair # of those don't have much for a yard.

And the newer, nicer areas that I like? I had a townhouse with a bigger yard than most of these. I have seen some really nice houses which were far bigger and nicer than I needed - which also cost more than I really wanted to spend - and STILL they have these yards I could cut with a weed whacker. I'm not exaggerating. Excuse the expression but "wtfo?" Who would want (and could afford) such a nice big place in such a nice area, yet be able to reach out their window and shake their neighbor's hand in the other house....esp if you have kids and/or a dog?

/rant

Applies to lot size, too.

And the market says small yards are more desirable than large yards.

Kid's toys in the yard? - that's definitely a warning sign. Stay far, far away!

Noy buying it. I think they just jammed as many houses together as they could to make more and people moving here had little choice.

What size house are you looking for? There's a brand new house that has never been lived in that's up for rent on Stony Hill Rd. If I had to guess it's ~1500 s.f. sitting on .75 acre.

Try looking around the Preston area of Cary. Lots of homes on a 1/4+ acre private lot, with great landscaping and homes not all that old.

NW Cary is a difficult place to find lots larger than say .22-.25 unless you bring bags of money (see Copperleaf).
Some decent lot sizes in the new section of Abbington (albeit @500K and up).
We lucked out and found .33 in SE Cary that backs up to a 250 foot buffer with plenty of trees.

Most new homes built within the last 10-15 years will not have large yards mainly due to higher costs for land, and the builders' desire to maximize the number of units per acre they can build to maximize profits.

Your best bet will be the older neighborhood homes built 20-30 years ago or look in the more rural areas with less density per acre of land.

I feel your pain.......Good luck!
