Honestly I read way more anti-Cary sentiment on this board than I have encountered in my three years of living in the area. I wound up in Apex when I first moved here, partly swayed by the "you get more for your money" comments, and a bit by the "Containment Area for Relocated Yankees" anti-Cary mentality. What I found was that you may get more house for your money, but you don't get any trees. I couldn't get out of my clear-cut '90's subdivision fast enough and now I live in a rather funky 20-year old house that needs a lot of updating - but I can see Fred G. Bond Metro Park from my front yard, and I have 30' trees in my backyard.

As for this board - you have your constant Cary bashers, and the one cheerleader who eggs them on. Honestly I find it really tiresome and have put most of the broken records on ignore. It makes the board a much more pleasant place to hang out. You need to just visit the area, figure out what you like, and go from there. This board is a great source of information, but you do need to filter out the personal bias a bit, and not let it scare you off. I like living in Cary, but I certainly know it's not for everyone!

Good luck!

PS - Here are my trees!

Not quite an urban loft!

TabbyCats is on a distinguished road
Hello fellow soon-to-be-newcomer. We're like you--no kids, don't attend church much anymore, and 1 cat who rules the household (she's 21, and I'm worried about how she's going to handle the move). We'll get moved to NC sometime this summer.

We currently live in a nice subdivision in the midwest, but it's a little too crowded for me, so we're looking for a bit more space (1+ acre lots) in this move. At our "T" intersection, going out 3 houses in 3 directions from us, there are 21 children. The neighbors in closest proximity to us have 3 kids under age 6, and the husband is a minister! LOL....I try not to be doing any yardwork during the time they come home from Church on Sunday....or let hubby drink beer out on that side of the house I've often wondered what they think of us, but then I remember--that's not any of my business. I find we usually get what we expect to find, so I'm hoping to find as much tolerance there in NC as I've found anywhere.

Good luck!
Tab

Cary has a lot to recommend it, but I'd really encourage you to look at other areas in the Triangle. If you are child-free then you aren't concerned about schools and that can enable you to move to areas on the periphery of the Triangle that are "right across the county line" so close to services but in a different school district. Personally in your shoes I'd look at Northern Chatham County near Chapel Hill, or the edge of Chatham County closest to Cary. A lot of Chatham County has a great funky vibe with lots of small farms and folks into sustainable agriculture, and a lot of artists.

I am a native of the Triangle, and I grew up in a rural area, and I would never describe Cary as being a rural area. It is suburban. I live there, and I live in the suburbs. If you are looking for the suburbs, then these are nice suburbs. As adlinc07 already pointed out, there are some places with plenty of trees. However, those are often the older construction homes.

You can buy wine on Sunday here, after noon . Personally in the church discussions I think it is best to say "oh, we're still looking for just the right church" (which has some truth for us, but it would work if it was a line too) and then they'll invite you to yours and you say "thanks, we'll take a look at that one." And then it never comes up again.

Ah yeah, I didn't see that the OP mentioned new construction. Sometimes I think the only way to get new construction with a bit of land & trees is to buy property out in the country and have a house built. New subdivisions (90's and newer) seem to be clear cut no matter whether they are in Cary, Apex or further out.

FYI - Not that it's a big deal but liquor stores (called ABC stores, ABC = Alcohol Beverage Control) in NC are closed on Sunday as well. Wine can be bought on Sunday afternoons at the grocery store.

Who knew Cary had the highest population in the entire state? You learn something new everyday.

The truth is, Cary is suburban Raleigh, just independent from the city since it never got annexed. Anywhere around Raleigh outside the beltline is pretty much the same regardless if you're in Cary or Raleigh. Cary just doesn't have an urban downtown like Raleigh and some people think Cary is better for it.

I basically agree with this statement. Unlike some places where there's a distinct distance between central city and suburb, Cary is literally slammed up against the city limits of Raleigh on the W/SW side of Raleigh. One can go from Raleigh to Cary and not even know it if they don't see a sign telling them that they entered a new city.
There are parts of Cary that are actually closer to DT Raleigh than places that are in the Raleigh city limits.

Would have to say I disagree with that. Get off the beltline at Six Forks Road and drive around then get off the beltline at Rock Quarry Road and drive around. Then get back to me on that statement.
