Default Recommendation for a moving company... from CA to NC?

My husband and I have gotten some on-site quotes from a couple companies, but we're not sure about their reputations. Anyone have firsthand experience with a great national moving company?

I was going to tell you one NOT to use, but for some reason I can't think of the name.... I must have repressed it from my memory. However, if you google national moving company reviews, there are a lot of websites directed towards this topic. Hopefully that helps.

It just came to me!- Graebel. Now, this could be one of those things where they're amazing usually and we just had a bad experience, but they broke an entire set of patio furniture and their son (who was with them during the move.... unprofessional in my opinion) stole a bunch of my brother's video games. Granted, we got reimbursed but only after a ton of paperwork and phone calls.

I think Mayflower just moved us from LA to Cary, and we thought they were great.

We used Allied from Portland, Or to Durham. They were great. I packed all the boxes but they loaded & unloaded everything. Nothing was broken, nothing was lost. Our driver was a great guy.... called us w/ updates.

But there are a TON of consumer complaints and scams about moving. Google your state or company name and scams and consumer complaints. I spent a week wading through all that.

We also had friends who moved from Portland to Key West w/ Mayflower and loved them. There are good movers out there.

My brother used Mayflower for his move from NC to CA two years ago and plans to use them for his move back in a few weeks. I'm guessing he was satisfied with their service and rates since he's using them again.

I always recommend Moving: How to avoid Moving Company Scams as a great source of information on movers and the really scary moving scams that are out there.

Avoid internet moving brokers like the plague.

Always get a guaranteed estimate.

Be sure to take more than minimum insurance.

Thanks for all the tips!

Now, if anyone can tell me how to pack with a 19 month old toddler 'helping' me, I'd be all set!

have you thought about using PODS. i used it for a move and it was great because i could pack it over time ( while your 18 month old is napping) there are also always things like craigslist where you could hire someone local to unload if you want.
