Question UNC Hospitals or Duke Univ Med Ctr

Anyone familiar with UNC Hospitals or Duke Univ Med Ctr? Any advice as to which may be the better employer? I'm looking at some opportunities at both & curious if anyone might have some information to help me focus my efforts. I'm from out of state and not terribly familiar with either other, than their web sites. Thanks.

Duke benefits are hard to beat. The 401K is the best I've ever had in terms of employer contributions and if your position qualifies for the college benefit and you have kids, that should pretty much settle the deal.

Basically, Duke will pay for 2 kids, up to 75% of the going rate of Duke's tuition ( after subtracting the current in state tuition rate) for any school in the country your children go to. For example, I don't have the exact current numbers, but say your child is looking to go to Tufts in Boston, which I believe has a comparable tuition to Duke, if the instate NC tuition is say 4500, you subtract 4500 off the top of the bill and then Duke will pay the other 75% leaving you with just a little over 25% to finance. Thats 4 years for 2 kids.....

If your kids are 10-12 years from college like mine, that benefit could potentially be worth $400-500K easily....

Does that mean they pay you close to nothing? Do you have to work for a minimum amount of years before you can qualify?
I've read in previous posts that Duke pretty much at the bottom regarding pay scale, but that the allure of working at their facilities PLUS the benefits outweigh that...but nobody ever mentioned the tuition thing. Do you know where I could find out more? Thanks in advance.

I don't think the pay is that bad, from everything I have heard, salary at Duke for most positions is better than UNC hospitals.

I could probably make a bit more outside of Duke in my field but the benefits would be hard to beat.

Go to www.hr.duke.edu to see more about benefits...

Thanks for the information. The tuition benefit sounds great - I have two children also and college costs are outrageous. I think I will focus my efforts on Duke.

Zipscott thanks for your excellent question. Bluedevilz thanks for the link! I went to the link and the summary seems to be: your child is eligible for the "tuition grant" if you(as employee) have 5 years of full time service! Your child still gets the tuition grant in the event that you die while employed by Duke(assuming you met the eligibility requirements at time of death). Not that I am looking forward to death, but my son will be turning 4 this year. He and I have several years to go until he starts college!

I used to work at NC State, but you know, part of the unc system. Because UNC is public, the benefits just are not as good as duke. For year and years ( I remember my parents friends working at duke for the benefits) duke has been at the top for benefits and for being family friendly. UNC is just a bigger institution, and everything goes through the "unc system" and legislature, because it is a public institution.

Raises at NC State were a complete joke. You can also find any salaries for the state employees (UNC included) in their library on campus. It will give you a good idea of what people are making with different levels of experience.

Would that be NC State's library or UNC's?

Does Duke have any type of tuition waiver for an employee's own education? For instance, for someone interested in going to graduate school in a few years, would Duke pay for that education, or only if I have children (or only after five years)?

I know the UNC system will pay for three classes a year you take at a UNC school, but how long do you have to be employed to take advantage of that?
