I have a 34 1/2 inch fiberglass shower in my master. I had a tile guy come out and quote me an estimate on placing tile floor in my master bathroom. He mentioned taking the fiberglass shower out and replacing it with tile. It never crossed my mind to do that before. Tile for floor, floor, materials, shower, and labor...total cost all together would be $1700.

If I just had the floor done in tile, it would be about $500 total for labor and materials

My question is: Would it be a smart move to replace the fiberglass shower (it has no tub, just shower) with tile. Our neighborhood is in the 155,000 to 170,000 range and I'm pretty sure no one else in the neighborhood has done this. I just would want that money back in return when we sell our house in about 4 years. Not for investment purposes, just would hate to do a renovation that you have to eat the cost when you sell.

I'm sure it would look awesome, but if people don't care whether they had a fiberglass shower or a tile shower, then I would rather stick with our old fiberglass shower.

When you come to sell it might set you aside from other houses in a good way. It sounds like since you're already having a tile floor put in, the tile in the shower might be a nice addition. I'm sure they're also giving you a bit of a break to do both at once.

Depends. What's the rest of the bathroom like? Nice new floor and shower, but how about the shower enclosure - you updating that too? Plumbing fixtures? Cabinets, sinks, and countertops? I'm not suggesting you do, but a piecemeal update may not net you much.

i would DEFINITELY prefer tile shower to fiberglass! Now, I have no expertise to say if that would pay in your price range or not. But, it is a strong personal preference of mine!

I don't think you would see a price increase but it would probably make your home more desirable than the one next door.

If you don't want your fiberglass shower, I'll take it! (We have a little-used tiled shower that needs the floor ripped apart to fix a leak, so we'll probably be replacing it with a fiberglass enclosure.)

I think a nice earthtone tiled bathroom would be very nice for you and agree it would make your home more desirable than similar ones with fiberglass showers.

There actually is a nice seperate tub with tile surround in the bathroom. We would be looking at replacing the countertop on the vanity with granite next year since I burnt the cultured marble with my flat iron....so new countertop and sink faucets will be coming next year. The new tile shower would not make the house sell faster when we sell...since homes in our neighborhood usually sell within 20 days of being on the market. Mainly young professionals moving into our neighborhood. Everything would blend nicely.....just don't want to loose money in the end.

Yes, tile the shower while the man is there already! New tile is nice but stepping out of your newly tiled shower onto it will be even better. I would think not doing it would be noticed at selling. Just do it!

Just make sure the installer is an experienced tile SHOWER installer...this coming from someone who's had to replace the leaky tile shower the builder put in. What a mess.
