My "man cave" is the space that is left over in our bizarrely large washer - dryer room.
I have a computer and fly tying equipment there. A little tough sometimes to tie a number 24 midge with the overly large drying going at it!!!
Nothing like coming into my man cave and finding my chair full of bras and panties.
I guess that is the price of livin with three wimen. No, it ain't like that either... wife and two teenage daughters. Ugh.
It is ok, go ahead and say it..." L O S E R"

None of the rooms in our house fit our ideas for a home office/media room so we converted a 12x24 outbuilding. We considered it cheaper than adding on to the house (cost to buy and finish the outbuilding was ~$6000 seven years ago) and we sneaked around the additional tax burden of an addition by not saying that the outbuilding was a finished room. On our property taxes, it's listed as a 'shed'

We have a 3 flor townhome:
1st floor is main living area - den, living room, kitchen, dining, porch
2nd floor - bedrooms, baths
3rd floor - 20 ft bonus room and office alcove
DH has taken over the 3rd floor as "his space" - big TV, recliners, computer etc.

We have a 2600 square foot craftsman style SFH in the woods. 1st floor living with huge cathedral ceiling screen porch. That is the outdoor man cave, but I let my wife join me. The second floor has 2 guest bedrooms and a massive home theater room. That's the real man cave. It's a great setup.

Mine is about 25 * 35 and has my 100in screen and surround sound. Only cost me about $2200 total, so not terribly great quality, but 5.1, light controlled and fits the bill. It was a present for myself for my first child.

I told hubby when we built our home, 18 years ago..."you can have the walk up attic (unfinished), ONE walk in closet in master (we were smart enought to have two), coat closet in hall downstairs (this man collect coats) and the garage, as long as I have enough room to park my car!
I ALWAYS find it funny when my clients tell me they "must have a man cave"!
We are spoiling our men!!!

Thanks to all who responded - alot of good ideas and a little eye opening on my part to the flexibility of a bonus room.
As far as the term "man cave," I used it primarily because of the TV show(don't know - go to hulu.com and check it out). Our multi-purpose entertainment space has always been and always will be a place for my wife and I to play - we both love pool and air hockey as well as watch sports together. In my current house, we have pool table and air hockey in the basement but there is no good place for a Large Screen and furniture so that is in our family room upstairs. I so look forward to putting it all in one area.(which is why I personally still think a basement is the best place as it is most likely to have the most space).
Keep the ideas coming please.

I've been wondering about what we're going to do with all our basement stuff too. (We're moving to the Triangle from the Midwest). Hubby says our pool table IS going with us, and I like our 70" Sony TV (both only 2 years old), so we're going to look for houses with basements or ones with big enough bonus rooms for the pool table to be playable and with a spare bedroom big enough to hold the big screen TV and surround sound and Ekornes "stressless" lounge chairs (the TV is too big for the family room). Like you, I still think a basement arrangement makes the most sense. I wouldn't mind building (again)--a simple ranch on a walkout, finished basement would be nice. We might just do it since this is likely our last career move and if happy enough here, we'd stay after retirement, so we want to be happy with our home.

My man cave is an extra bedroom we had built with sound dampening walls so I can use it as a music studio.
