Grocery shopping is a bit of a challenge here...
I like Harris Teeter but it is rather expensive.
I am also picky about lunch meats as I bring my lunch most days as do my kids, really only like Boars Head products which only Krogers and Lowes Foods seem to stock for some reason.
Another summertime option for those of us in Orange County for produce is the Carrboro and Hillsborough Farmers Markets which open soon.
Great place to hang out on a Saturday morning, the Carrboro Market in particular has such an array of fresh vegetables plus great breads and other home baked goods....

New Cary Fresh Market is now open on the Cary Parkway near Prestonwood. They closed the one on Kildaire Farm Road.

Jdatlas, I live on the western bit of the Triangle, so all of my recommendations are over there. But I think A Southern Season is worth an extra trip, in my opinion. And a Trader Joe's will be opening in Chapel Hill (along the 15/501), so we won't have to treck out to Cary for Three Buck Chuck.
Also, we're coming up on farmers' market season, so your options will certainly expand! Most of these markets pop up just once a week, but the state Farmers' Market is open every day.

I hear that the restaurant here is great!
Carrboro & Chapel Hill: www.carrborofarmersmarket.com
Durham: www.durhamfarmersmarket.com
There are also farmers' markets in Cary, Hillsborough, Pittsboro, and Fearrington. Some of them don't seem to have their own websites yet, but we can always find out some details for you if you need them.
You might like to check out the South board at Chowhound.com. A lot of Triangle residents post there & they can offer tons of advice on restaurants & food shopping: www.chowhound.com

I prefer Harris Teeter, Lowe's (because it is 90 seconds from my house) and Super Target. Super Target has some good prices. Lactaid for my girls is $2.99 there, but $3.79 at Harris Teeter. When they go through one every day or every other day that adds up. I've never cared for Trader Joe's. Whole Foods is good. Nice produce and fish.

Not just those areas....Wake Forest has a season Farmer's market held weekly, and the one at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh is open year around I believe.

Although I do agree with another poster's assessment of Fresh Market, I do have to admit that coming from the Seattle metro area, it's a downright bargain for me. I'm sure that will wear off once I'm settled in for a few months, though :-)

A Southern Season rocks. Don't go there in the, like, four weeks before Christmas, though. :-)
