I'm not completely familiar with this area yet seeing I have only been down here less than a year. I was curious if there are any good camping sites in or around the Triangle area? I know Jordan Lake has some sites but does anyone have experience with them? Do you think it's best to go camping out toward the mountains or near the ocean? Also, are you allowed to have alcohol at any of the campgrounds in the state? I appreciate any input or advice you have to offer

We love camping in The Uwharrrie National Park in Randolph, Stanly, Montgomery and Davidson counties about an hour and a half from Raleigh. The Uhwharrie Mountains are thought to be 500 million years old. They once were believed to have risen 20,000 feet above sea level. They now rise to 1100 feet . I also love camping at Cape Lookout National Seashore. The spring and the fall are the best time as it gets too hot in the Summer. Umstead has some nice, fairly remote camping spots as well. Good luck. North Carolina has much to offer to the camping lover.

There's decent camping at most of the area reservoirs and state parks. That said, I find camping at the coast (spring/fall) or mountains (summer) to be more enjoyable as there's usually more to do and better weather.

You are not allowed alcohol, but IMO if you keep it discreet (i.e., no loud music or boisterous behaviour) you'll be fine. I bring beer everytime I go camping and have only been fined once in 25 years, and that was in Texas when the park ranger saw my Coors Silver Bullet can glistening in the afternoon sun

You can camp out at Umstead State Park. Right off of highway 70 between 540 and 440.

JQ, have you ever been there? If so, what do you think of it?

It's very "beginners camping" but good for kids and novices. It has tons of trails to traverse and it should be gorgeous this time of year. You have to check in by a certain amount of time each night and the Forest Ranger will come by and get your campsite rental fee and he'll also sell you some firewood. It is usually packed so you may have to set up shop early depending on how good the weather is. I think I went in September 2008 and had a good time!

As far as more experienced camping is concerned I heard there are some good campsites around Grandfather Mountain. The NC Mountains definitely provide for awesome camping. Good Luck! I don't know about alcohol at either, but I think you'll be fine as long as you're not rowdy.

Lots of great places around the NC Mountains--near Linville Falls is where I used to go once or twice a year. You can park the car right at the campsite, but otherwise it's very no-frills (no bathroom nearby--there are bathrooms down at the ranger station at the bottom of the mountain but no running water. It's more like a permanent Port-a-Potty). Tons of hiking sites of all levels around the area.
