Did you relocate to the Raleigh area with or without a job? Perhaps you came here because you are retired?
My guess is most folks come here due to the RTP and other surrounding area job opportunities. Could the blame for our growth and popularity be on the shoulders of industry? Perhaps it’s not so much just the whim of folks who want to move here and eventually do.
We moved here because my husband got a good job offer, while still employed in Austin. We would not have even thought about moving without the better opportunity. In fact, we never thought about NC before we started our research to move here. Wonder how many other folks would say the same thing?

Relocated for a job opportunity with a company I have long admired - happened on lark and quickly. That there are so many other opportunities is icing on the cake.
And we got away from road salt and 4-5 months of winter!
We haven't quite relocated yet, but our reasons were to live by extended family (they're in Apex/Cary), and for lower cost of living (we're in Northern Virginia currently). We have four children and the places we can afford in this area would be quite a squeeze.
We left all of our family back in Dallas, Texas
We left all of our friends
We left 2 excellent jobs.
We left Texas' low cost of living, especially real estate
Why?
We were tired of the Texas heat. We were tired of concrete, concrete, and more concrete. We wanted to get away from all the traffic and strip-malls and pollution. And wanted a change of scenery . . . one with trees. We wanted an adventure.
We decided that we wanted to move, so we started researching on the internet. We wanted a place with moderate climate. We wanted a place with lots of outdoor recreation. We wanted to be in a small city, but it had to be near an international airport. It also had to have a relatively low cost of living. We also had to find a place that had a good high tech job base so that I could find a job.
We went on scouting trips to Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, Asheville, Charlotte, Winston/Salem, Raleigh/Durham, and Boulder CO (my idea, not hers) before deciding on Raleigh.
Was born in NC, went to school at NC State, took a job out-of-state for the money, but moved back because NC is NC!
Love the people (including friends & family), the area, and of course, the Wolfpack!
