It has been awhile! I hope all is well. I have about 2 weeks of posts to read through. Sometimes life just gets busy. At any rate.
I am taking off a half day tomorrow to spend some QT with my bride. Does anyone have any ideas for a day trip? Anything in the triangle area or something within driving distance for a quick day trip (would leave around noonish)
Yadkin Valley - NC's Wine Country. There are a lot of nice wineries in the area; a couple of the larger ones also have restaurants where you can enjoy a nice lunch or dinner. It's just a short distance west of Winston-Salem, so from Durham you should be there in a little over 1.5 hours.

Is the wine any good? We have been to the 'Great Grapes' wine festival in Cary a number of times and they only have North Carolina wines and we were not impressed.
The wine is not great; it's certainly not Napa or Sonoma. However, there's something tranquil and romantic to me about riding through the countryside from vineyard to vineyard. Two wineries with the better wine in the area, IMHO, are Westbend & Shelton. Shelton has a beautiful estate setting and a very nice tasting room/store. I believe they also have a very good restaurant on site. As far as the wines, I've had some decent "reserve" Cabs and have also found Chardonnay to be decent at the NC wineries. I'm not partial to the sweet reds and whites that so many vinters around here produce.

I was just there and I was not impressed. Maybe it's cause it's so early in the season.
If you do not like Duke Gardens at this time of the year then you are probably never going to be impressed. I was there last week and it was very pretty.
