Default Zip Code 27610

We are planning a trip, Like a million other people it seems in may to Raleigh with a planned moved if all goes well for next spring. The price range we are looking at house in is 175-200K. We are a family with 4 school age kids,. It seems like all of the houses that are available( I would like new) are in zip code 27610..since I know nothing about raleigh...what can anyone tell me good or bad about that section of town and the schools that we might be assigned living there...... Please be candid, This is a big decision we are making and I would like to consider everyones opinion.... Thanks

The new builds in 27610 (east of downtown Raleigh, south of New Bern Ave) are probably less expensive because:

1) It's a long way from RTP, a major employment area
2) interstate 540 is just now coming around to that side of town

Enloe (inside 440), East Wake, and Knightdale HS cover parts of 27610. There are probably more...

It's been mentioned here lots before. Zips 27610, 27604, and some parts of 27603 are substantially cheaper than other zips in Raleigh. Some of it has to do with its long distance from Cary / RTP / west and North Raleigh. You should also know that GENERALLY SPEAKING, these areas are slightly higher in crime, and while it's not politically correct to say, has a larger percentage of minorities residing within the zip.

That absolutely doesn't mean you can't find a wonderful place to live in these zips, but they're cheaper for a reason, of course.

Nothing wrong with saying those areas have a larger minority population however, I'd simply say those areas have a larger population of lower income residents regardless of race. Many homes in some of those zips are built for citizens that have less money (first time buyers, younger families, etc...) to spend and are cheaper and more affordable than homes in more affluent area codes like 27614 (wealthiest zip code in the area) and 27617 (although I was told construction has started on subdivisions in 27610 that are more upscale).

There is a slight stigma attached to the 27610 zip code but for the most part the Raleigh area is not as bad as other cities when it comes to things like this. Some areas of 27610 have the historically worst drug areas of Raleigh in them but that isn't representative of the entire zip code overall.

Enloe is great if you are a magnet student and come from another part of the county. Avoid East Wake like the plague.

I would guess Enloe is great even if you aren't coming from another part of the county. The academic magnet means a large disparity between the "gifted" classes and the rest. Is this right?

I should add Garner HS to the 27610 list, as the zip goes all the way down to the Garner town limits...

Ok, I guess one of the things that worrried me was reading the news websites and seeing a couple of young teenage kids(14) who were shot recently, Where was that? (27610) ... Is this a random thing or happen quite a bit..
As far as the Minority rate in the zip I would like to find a balanced part of the city to live in considering we are an interacial couple with 4 bi racial children I want them to be comfortable where ever they are.. I appreciate everyones comments keep the info coming what ever you want to tell me about the area , I love the input..

Check out this new development in the 27610 zipcode. "Olde Towne" will be over 2000 homes on 600 acres on a 18-hole golf course at the intersection of Rock Quarry and New Hope Roads. With built in parks, greenways, pools with homes from the $150's to over $500,000. 28610 is on the come up quickly and this development will spear head them all they are sending out information now and the clearing is well under way the first homes should be ready beginning of '08.
