Graduation Project Requirement Delayed by One Year to Give Communities More Time to Prepare for Implementation

I just discovered that they are delaying the Graduation Project requirement for one year. Good news for those who graduate next year. Not such good news for my daughter who graduates in 2010. I sure hope they decide to delay it again.

Just because the state has delayed it doesn't mean individual districts or schools will avoid it. I know a number of schools in Wake County are moving forward with the grad. project as planned.

Ugh! I was hoping they would realize what a total mess that concept was before mine got that far. This delay makes it more likely that his class will need to do it before they figure out how flawed it is.

Apparently in Chapel Hill they will decide at the next BOE meeting on April 23.

I must have missed something. What is flawed about it/ why is it a mess?

This has been standard practice in Charlotte-Meck for 13 years (I did this in 1997) and it's really not that hard. I don't understand the problems here.

My son completed his graduation project in Kings Mountain, NC this year. It was a great experience. (most of the time) We only spent $14, so don't let anyone tell you the cost to too much! KM has been participating the program since (I think) 2000. The research paper is the hard part. But they need to do that anyway!!!

It depends on how they implement it. The thought process behind it is good, but I know for example one school district that required a mentor for each student presenting their project, but that mentor could not be affiliated with the school AND had to be an expert (in some way) in the topic the student chose. The district came to realize more adults were needed than actually were available, so the plan failed. This is actually the 2nd year it has been postponed. What does that say?
