My fiance and I are moving from the North East to the Raleigh Durham area. My parents moved down there a few years ago, and I want to join them. However, I'm a financial advisor and want to start my own business down there. Can anyone point out what my major competition will be in the Raleigh/Durham area? Also, what would be a nice area to start an office? I've heard the towns of Apex, Cary, and Fuquay mentioned by my parents. Does anyone know of any Financial Advisors that have moved from the North East and opened businesses down there?

Hmmm... someone might be able to give you an idea about your competition, but in terms of a good location for your business, I'd recommend looking somewhere central to the whole area, unless you're looking to tap a niche in Fuquay-Varina. Cary would be good, as well as North Raleigh between I-440 and I-540. There's actually a lot of office space being built just north of I-540 along Falls of Neuse Rd., too. You could look for something downtown, but the cost might be higher for starting up.

I have a couple commercial brokers I've referred clients to in the past - feel free to pm me if you'd like their information, I'm sure they could give you more specific recommendations.

Good luck!

I would suggest to place your office in an area that has new growth. If you were to try an area within the beltline or right outside the beltline (440),those home owners have for the most part been there for over 30 years and are already dealing with someone. New homeowners, many in the same situation you are, relocating, will be looking for someone to do business with. Cary, Morrisville, Brier Creek section, RTP. I agree with NCHomeFinder...along the I-540 is also a good choice.
Good Luck and welcome to the Triangle!

Excellent advice. Financial advising is about relationships, especially in the South. Since the thread starter doesn't have any ties to the area, he would likely have more success catering to other newcomers from the northeast.
