Anyone know if they changed the runway directions at RDU?
They seem to be taking off in different directions and flying a little lower by my house and generally in N Raleigh
The direction of the wind controls the direction for takeoff and landings. As to the height of the planes, there is a lot that can affect that. I've always found the weather has the biggest effect (e.g., when it rains, the planes fly much lower). But other criteria, such as the type and weight of the plane, can also affect the flight patterns.
The runways are pretty much fixed. RDU's main runways are roughly positioned on a NE/SW axis. They also have a cross-winds runway which runs more east/west.
The majority of takeoffs from RDU head toward the south - but sometimes based on wind that gets flipped around and the takeoff traffic heads north.
Well one of their runways was closed so you might have gotten used to the reduced air traffic overtop your house and then when it reopened (can't remember, not too long ago) it might have picked up. So I guess what I'm saying is you're not going crazy .
