I got a burrito, and the rice inside it was mushy and bland, but the meat was so overpowering on the spiciness. All I could taste was jalapeno and nothing else. I do love my things spicy, but I like a little more flavor complexity than that. My husband was disappointed in his tacos. Our guests didn't say anything about theirs, but I could tell they weren't enjoying it. Too bad. We got it right every other meal, though, thankfully.

Tres Hermanas closed a long time ago. They have since re-opened under a different name, but I have not been there since the change. I can only hope they are as good, or even half as good.

FWIW, with all the good reviews of Chubby's, I'd say you hit it on a bad day. If you go back and have the same experience, then you can just figure you have different taste than others, but I would not make a final decision on a highly rated place after just one bad visit. But that's just me....

I hit the Chubby's off Lake Boone Trail, behind the McD's and the Starbucks in the shopping center (in a corner, next to Tuesday Morning... so you have to know it's there). It rocks my socks everytime.

all was good (although the grilled chicken is kinda boring and is like any other chicken you get at local 'mexican' places), but the shrimp taco is UNREAL! it's about as close as i've found to Rubio's tacos (anyone?).

i took a buddy who is a die-hard Chipotle fan to try these guys. he's mad at me because now all he wants is Chubby's but he lives in Greensboro.

i LOVE having these guys right next door!

but, if you want a true taqueria (i'm talking a place that makes its own tortillas and where being a bit bilingual probably is not a bad idea), try Tres Hermanas next to Big Lots on the corner of 55/54. VERY good!

Mike
As for Chubbys, I love their taquitos. My husband tried the burritos & didn't like it because it had that nasty cheese sauce on it instead of just good shredded cheese.

And as for fish tacos...Rubios was good, Wahoos was better!!!

sacriledge! I never got into Wahoo's. To me, Wahoo's was to Rubio's what Moe's is to Chipotle. It's a perfectly fine establishment that I'll eat at if taken, but it would never be my first choice. I did like the quintessential SoCal vibe versus the Baja feel at Rubio's, for whatever fast food decor is worth, lol.

but thanks for making me miss SoCal that much more

Mike

Yeah...Wahoos had the vibe going on for sure. Don't get me started on Moes...yuk! But for tacos...I would kill for 2 steak tacos from La Salsa!!! Simple and delish : )

Or better yet, Frescas...did you ever have those? There was one in Newport & one in Tustin...and I think one by Angels stadium. The burritos are hands down the best I've ever eaten!! Ok, I'll stop now. Can ya tell I miss the mex food??? That's been the hardest part of this move I swear....

I recommend the spicy tinga chicken. Whenever I see a political sign telling me to vote for this Tinga person, I think, "Mmm, spicy tinga chicken".
