Default retirement communities

My husband and I are thinking of relocating to Raleigh, NC. We are also trying to drag grandma and grandpa with us. Not to live with us, but to find an active adult community within an hour from Raleigh. Any suggestions? They are looking for 250k or less?

Default Independent Living Retirement Community in Raleigh

You might check out Alta Oakridge. It's a new independent living retirement community in North Raleigh, near the intersection of Durant and Falls of the Neuse (opening spring 2009). I've been inside and it is gorgeous, and the staff seem great. They say they will have a home health care agency on site for residents who need more assistance.

Their website is

The "Sandhills" area, which is about 1.5 hours SW of Raleigh, is a huge retirement mecca and has a very active and thriving Senior population. It's known for lots of golf, but also many other activities and, naturally, senior centers of varying degrees. My dad still has a house, so I don't know the prices of retirement homes or assisted living places there, but there are tons of them.

You'd look under towns like Southern Pines, Pinehurst, Aberdeen, Seven Lakes, etc.

In Cary, Carolina Preserve (Del Webb community) and Heritage Pines. The clubhouse at Carolina Preserve is amazing.

You can certainly get them into Carolina Preserve for $250,000.

There are 6 resale listings currently, from 1390 SF to 1561 SF, priced from $235,000--$254,900, and the prices then go up from there to over $500,000.

The folks need to know they are "buying a lifestyle," with $199+/- monthly HOA dues. But that includes a bounty of services, exterior home and grounds maintenance, for one.
And the homes are mostly on slabs, so there are few if any steps at entries.
36" interior doorways, etc, for access.
