Default Help identifying flowers I saw today....

I saw the most beautiful flowers growing around someone's mailbox in Cary this morning. Long stems (12" min), BIG red petals with a yellow center. Almost the shape of a daisy...kind of....but bigger. Then I saw the same flower in another yard, but those had white petals with a yellow center. Can anyone recommend a website maybe, where I can locate and identify this flower?

Not Gerbera...petals were much bigger. And they were flowers. Not on a vine.

Could be a kind of poppy....do they have bright yellow centers though? I know its not coneflower or hibiscus. To get a picture, I'll have to walk through this person's yard (whom I don't know) and I'm not sure they would appreciate that!
