I personally miss the Italian butcher with those really fine aged steaks and homemade pasta!

Did you buy a jar? If so, make your self a fluffernuter sandwich. It MUST be on nice soft white bread. Peanut butter on one slice, Fluff on the other. Put them together and enjoy with a big glass of milk!!!!

I don't get it.. If so many NY NJ people are moving here, Why aren't the same type of food stores coming with them? Italian grocery? NY Pizza?
Those type of stores are usually family run business's right? If the families are in NC, Why not the business?

good pizza for a good price (yah maybe there are a few decent places around, but it's not really easy to find and it costs more)

Hey Jdatlas-

Elephant & Castle Restaurant on Devonshire St in Boston has some great digs. For the longest time (maybe 20 years) in the town of Stoughton, they had a small seafood eatery called Fort Cliff's. Best fish and chips ever. After that they were bought out by new management, renamed to Frasers...the Fish and Chips were never the same but they still had the malt vinegar. Unfortunately, that was bought out by a pizza joint and is no longer in existence. It's been gone about a year My husband and I later moved to Lowell and we had "fish and chips" at a place called Highland Cafe. It was really just a deep friend haddock, but still good. There are a few places in the Boston area that serve decent fish and chips, but I found some of the best at a few mom and pop eateries in Revere and Plymouth. Hope that helps!

It could be that we have great restaurants down here as well...it's not like there is a dearth of them in general.

There are a few....but I certainly hope people who come down here try what we have to offer and expand their experiences....not just complain they can't find what they just left behind (as good as I am sure it is).

I do like Davinci's in WF by the way...their ring sausage is great to throw on the grill.

Might be because opening a small buisness is harder these days as more chain type stores take over. There are pizza stores here already though.

As for what I miss the most:
I miss the feeling of truly owning my own house, here the HOA;s can make you feel like you are renting.

You must have picked a very restrictive one....not all HOAs are equal.

I've grown up on San Francisco sourdough bread and have heard that it is impossible to find in the Raleigh area. Anyone found any?

But on Chinese food, I DO know that the main problem is that most of it is the cheesy americanized versions. So the remedy for that is...go where the Chinese go. Which one place I've found like that is Red Palace on New Bern Ave in Raleigh. Very very different from your typical Chinese place.
I think its got to be a regional chinese food thing.. even at Red Palace (and I do go there frequently as I work around the corner from it), they make Shrimp with Lobster Sauce just like everywhere else down here. They make it as a runny white sauce with some small shrimp thrown in, and up north it's a deep rich flavored brown sauce with ground pork in it and huge butterflied shrimp. Whenever I go home that is the first thing I head to get, and if i'm flying in, my mom usually has picked me up some on her way! LOL

I've found some acceptable pizza places around, Veneros in Clayton, Primavera Pizza @ White Oak in Garner, Pucilla Italia at Cameron Village.

10 years ago, couldn't find Fluff here, now it's in a few grocery stores.

Definitely miss New England seafood... i love getting lobsters at the seafood places right on the docks, Rockport or Gloucester MA, having them steamed right there and eating at a picnic table. Does anyone know, does McDonalds (up in New England) still do Lobster Rolls in the summer... I'd really even settle for those down here!! Fried clams, chowder and roast beef sandwiches definitely at the old Kelly's on Revere Beach in MA. Get your food and sit on the wall, watchin' the waves roll in....even at 2:00am!
