Also, do they have city water/sewage. My guess is not (but you need to double check). Putting in a well/septic tank can run about 15K - 20K (or at least that is what I have been told). A lot depends on how far they have to dig for the well and what kind of septic system. Also make sure the lot perks.
Basements are standard in the northeast and I think they'd like one, but maybe not. I think they're very practical and do add useful square footage for minimal cost. We'll explore all options.
THis is not the northeast. They are practical, but they aren't a 'minimal cost' for the square footage in North Carolina.
Do keep your options open....because I've seen the demand for a basement really add too much to the total cost.
That's a really good point. Drees looks like a solid company and I imagine if you go with them it just gets done quickly and efficiently, too, as they're such a big outfit. Were you looking at the York? That comes very close to what we're looking for. How customizable are these plans? And have you checked out any other bigger companies like this with a similar model?
Thanks!
Other than seeing the York online, that's about all I've done. I'm still in IL waiting for our house to go on the market (and then sell, of course). Hubby's too busy w/ work (RTP) to househunt, so I'll do that when I get there. I'll look at pre-existing first, then builders. I only know about builders from what I've learned on here or elsewhere online. I'm sure there's plenty others out there with ranch plans, etc.
We have a basement here in the midwest where we have our pool table and also a theater room. I much prefer a basement over a bonus room and/or 2-story (which we have now). Basements are so much cooler in the summer. I understand about basements in NC, but there ARE houses with them, so it is do-able. Like you, we'll look for a sloped lot that will allow for at least a daylight (but prefer a walkout). We will be open to other possibilities, but that is currently our preference.
that will allow for at least a daylight (but prefer a walkout).
The terms 'daylight' and 'walkout' are used interchangeably....they are the same thing.
You are probably confusing the term 'daylight basement' with a 'lookout basement' which has some window that are above the ground, but no access to the outside.
Zoya, I meant that basements are standard in the NE, where my parents currently live. They're used to one and would probably like to have one here as well, that's all.
I love how the moderators deleted my comments but not 2BZee2Pee's insulting suggestion that I don't care about my parents. Heh.
I wonder where this troll will strike next?
