I have a friend coming in but I have to be at work when he gets in. I work downtown and he could hang out at my work if he could get their for a reasonable price. Hanging out in an airport for 5 hours will suck. So are there buses? what is the cheapest way?

Triangle Transit is one option. It is inexpensive, but will take a while in travel time: Raleigh-Durham International Airport (http://www.rdu.com/groundtrans/bustrain.htm - broken link)
Airport - Triangle Transit

Or there is always Super Shuttle. I know the fare from RDU to North Hills is about $17. I think you can get a fare quote on their website for your exact destination.

I would recommend triangle transit. If his only other option would be waiting 5 hours, he probably wouldn't mind taking the bus. Fare is $2 and the #747 bus comes approx. every 30 minutes. He will have to transfer to the #105 to Raleigh. He should tell that to the driver when he boards. The trip takes about 50 minutes to get from RDU to downtown.

Not sure how Super Shuttle works but he might end up waiting just as long, so it's probably not worth the $17. Especially since the Triangle Transit bus takes you downtown anyway. To me, Super Shuttle makes more sense when you're going somewhere far from the bus line (which is most of the Triangle - though Downtown Raleigh is an exception)

The bus stops are pretty easy to find. Right next to the park-n-ride and rent-a-car bus stops.

Did some research. Here are the pick up times at the airport (these are for Terminal 1; for Terminal 2, the time will be 2 minutes later in every case.)

(after 7:00pm there is a direct bus from RDU to DT Raleigh (570 or 670) but the schedule is irregular)

I do wish that CAT or TT would go ahead and offer direct bus service between the airport and downtown. I understand it's on the long range plans.
