Hi everyone, most likely moving from the NJ Shore to Cary area and have three main concerns aside from not knowing anyone there. 1st off specifically, what areas are the safest, nicest & most upscale)? I also have a toddler and will be eager to find an area with the best school system.
And my last tedious question is about my two biggest fears (Tornados and Bugs). Just how often do you see Tornados down there? I have never seen one in NJ but still manage to freak out with a Tornado watch on my TV. I guess maybe getting a house with a basement would help? If Tornados are there, just how bad are they?
And lastly bugs! I cant stand them. How bad are they there? and what is commonly seen?
I just moved here from the Jersey Shore a month ago. We live in the Brier Creek area.
There are definitely more bugs outside here than in NJ. That doesn't bother me much. So far I have seen a spider or two inside and DH had a tick, which I don't like. But that's not too different from Jersey in the summer.
You're about the 100th person in the past several weeks who has asked a "which areas are safe" question. Trust me, most average folks here don't really think about that question all that much. Other than a few areas of some cities that are economically blighted and subject to higher crime, we don't tend to think of our area as "unsafe." The typical middle class individual does not live in these areas.
The schools in West Cary have very high test scores. I found the bug issue can vary a lot--even within Cary. I have friends in Cary that seem to have a ton of mosquitoes but they never bothered me where we lived in Cary.

Two things I see here that I didn't see up north: American cockroaches and camel crickets, both of which are rather unnerving to the average entomophobe. The spiders here seem to be much larger than I what I used to encounter.
If you have not done the research yet, unlike up north there are no local school districts
that you can target where to settle down. There are COUNTY schools. It is one giant school district, with alot of students and very little funding. Be prepared for trailers, re-assignments, and lack of services/amenities that you would be used to up north. That is why taxes are so low. You get what you pay for.
The bug situation, especially mosquitoes that bite relentlessly during the day, is absolutely ridiculous. However, the winter is quite pleasant.
