Hello all:

I have narrowed my apartment search down to this list below based on an all day research affair that I am burned out with at this point! Please help with your personal stories/knowledge (or 1st person report from friend or family members?) about any of these that you can comment on! Add any that you think may fit the bill!

Looking for 2BR within 20 miles of UNC hospitals (hoping for 20-25 minute drive max), quiet (i.e. less college students/partying), great property managers. Looking to keep it near $1000/month. Those closest to UNC tend to have much less square footage for the dollar and those far away are, well, far away...I dont mind driving since I will get better value but many of the reports that I read online are not exactly stellar for any of the places (and I cant find anything about Hampton's @RTP except from their website...w/o futher ado

My picks in no order:

Southern Oaks: 13.6 miles from UNC hospital

The Exchange at Brier Creek: 17.7 miles

Alta Springs: 3.8 miles

Hampton's @ Research Triangle Park: 10.4 miles

The Pointe at Chapel Hill (formerly The Pointe at Crabtree, Northpark apartments and many others it seems): 4.6 miles

Alexan Panther Creek: 16.2 miles

Olde Towne @ Carpenter Village: 17.3 miles

Others I have omitted: Meadowmont was full and too expensive for my budget. Southern Village looks cheap for what you pay. Southpoint Village too expensive. Weston Lakeside is 20.5 miles from UNC and thus too far (unless there is a super fast way that an outsider like me does not know about)

Please opine if you can. Thanks,
Firstdoc

So, I'm assuming you'll be working at UNC Hospital? A resident perhaps from your screen name?

We moved from NJ last year - my wife is a resident at UNCH - and we were in the same boat as you - looking for 20-25 mins into UNCH - 20 mins exactly since she can take on-call nights from home. We did a 1-weekend look around (some of the same places you've mentioned above). We settled on a 3-bdrm place at a place called 1520 Magnolia (that's the name of the apartment, not the address). Hamptons and 1520 are roughly the same - I'd assume 2bdrms are well within your budget. Our final 2 were 1520 and Hamptons and we just went with 1520 because it was little bit bigger and the particular apartment had a lot of new things in it. So far it's been OK -the partying is sometimes a bit loud (we have kids), never had issues with management. We moved from an 800 sq foot high rise 1-bedroom to something twice the size for less than half the money, so no complaints from our side.

Also, keep in mind - are you going to be parking at UNCH or at a satellite lot and taking a bus in? That'll weigh heavily on your commute times. Also, while in the mornign it's about 25 mins into UNCH, everyone roughly leaves around that 5pm time and traffic can get congested on 54.

Have you looked at Carborro?

Lastly, I was talking to one of the facilities folks at our apartments and he was mentioning that in these economic times, a lot more people are renting - our complex was 90%+ full - which apparently hasn't happened in a long long time. That being said, I'm not sure what 'deals' are out there right now. I know parking has become an issue for us since everything is so full.

At any rate, PM me if you want more info.

Oh, one other one - Bridges of Southpoint -one of the other residents lives there and they've been pretty happy.

There are a TON of apartments around RTP - and most of them tend to cater to the transient professional population, so relatively quiet.

Good luck...

look into Westwood on the other side of
S. Columbia Street\ across from the UNC hospital. about 10 minute WALK from hospital. older neighborhood with alot of homes with apartments and some nice brick duplexes, etc. walking is always so much better and economical.....no loud college aged tenants- those seem to congregate in larger apartment complexes. alot of hospital folks in this area.

I actually lived here when it was called something like Sterling Forest, back when Southpoint was not even built. I thought the place was nice.

I can't say I know much about apartments, but I would try and minimize your commute.

My wife commutes to UNC everyday from SW Durham. She avoids I-40 and sticks with going 751 -> Stagecoach to get the campus.

Cheers!
Matt
