I hope on the list of reasons to move here is NOT unemployement benefits. I'll admit I don't know what rules there are, but I hope there are some that bar those that have not worked in NC for some time period (6 mo?) and been laid off here to be eligible for any benefits.

An interstate claims bills the benefits to the previous state.

Does anyone have an opinion for a statistician/data analyst considering relocation from the midwest without an offer lined up? I am aware of the various CROs and research groups in the area, but I am worried that with the economy in its present state that it will be difficult. I have tried without luck from out of state. I know that certain areas are more resilient to the economy such as healthcare and I am wondering if this is the case for statistics majors. I have a BS and MA in Statistics.

These are straight to the point good reasons. In fact, I would move to the Raleigh area if I was in any one of these 4 situations. Especially #4. I figure, if I became unemployed why look for a job in the city that I want to move away from. I might as well start looking for a job in Raleigh.

Also, if I was to be unemployed and looking, I would much rather be in Raleigh where I would actually like to live and enjoy being, than Miami.

But for now, being that I do not have a large bankroll and employed, I will stay put for a while.
Hmmm to much logic and thought process. You are ruining the fun now pass the popcorn and get with the program.

If people only moved when they had jobs would the West have ever been developed? Where would California be without the spirit of adventure so many headed West with? Where would the porn industry be if people only moved to California with jobs? Moving without a job is part of the American psyche. It is how we developed this great country. Did all immigrants come with jobs in hand? Milk and Honey will attract people who have that spirit of adventure and a need to become more. Remember!

Space: The final frontier
These are the voyages of the Starship, Enterprise
Its 5 year mission
To explore strange new worlds
To seek out new life and new civilizations
To boldly go where no man has gone before

It is our present, our past and our future.

Now come to Raleigh all ye who seek what you seek here.

Default Allow me to amend my position

If you are a Trekkie who believes in your heart that Star Trek is real; if you are very happy bartending at stinky dives and living in low-cost housing; if you are young and think "adventure" is moving to a strange city, hoping to get a job and finding minimum wage jobs are hard to find and often taken by people who are over-educated and over-experienced, then PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, come to Raleigh (or the Triangle) without a job!

The Reality:

For many, in NC and in many other states, this economy has whacked us big time. By "whack," I mean: "to strike with a smart, resounding blow or blows."

For the very first time in our lives
, after getting college degrees (including advanced degrees), and working hard to get great work experience, our "What if" questions are not:

"What if I don't get that raise?"
"What if I can't get time off to go on vacation?"
"What if I can't get into the graduate/doctorate program of my choice?"

Instead, our "what if" questions consist of:

"What if I can't find a job?"
"What if unemployment runs out before I have a job?"
"What do I do when my savings run out?"
"What if I can't pay the mortgage/rent?"
"What if there are no backups and there is no one to support me? Parents are gone, and I have always been the support for others. What now?"
"What if I have to place my beloved dog/cat in an animal shelter?"
"What if I get sick and have no health insurance?"
"What happens when the retirement account (that was to be used in the future) is tapped out?"
"What if I can't put food on the table?"

If you haven't yet suffered, you don't have a clue.

To encourage anyone, let alone college graduates with no work experience, to "boldly go" into an area with high unemployment, an area that is a media favorite and hence a top relocation destination for people from around the country, is simply cruel.

You are inviting them in to potentially suffer. Your advice would have been fine a few short years ago. But not now.

I can barely believe my eyeballs when I see people encouraging others to come here with no job lined up. I know they are good people, and I usually agree with everything they say. I can only assume they have been very fortunate and have not suffered. If they did, I cannot believe they would want others to suffer the same way.

It's not as if job seekers don't have a choice. People seeking health careers will most likely find jobs here.

Those seeking other types of work can go to any of the 44 other states that have LOWER unemployment rates. Texas is just one; you can get a job and a lot of house for your money. And no snow.

When the economy gets better, it's not as if there won't be enough people to fill the jobs. There are plenty of qualified people here, and when the jobs outnumber the candidates, people will be able to come here for a GOOD REASON.

This sounds elitist. What do you consider low-class housing? You can live in a nice apartment along Lake Lynn in North Raleigh for $500 a month. If you think that is low class, well I feel sorry for you.

BTW, when's the last time you applied for a job tending bar or waiting tables? They are not as rare as you make them out to be. At least that's what my friends who do that kind of work tell me. Not all of them plan to make a career out of it, but they seem to be getting by alright in the meantime. I think they are pretty knowledgeable in that area so I tend to believe what they have to say about it. Although they probably aren't aware people like you think they are "low class".

My neighbor up the street started working as a server at second empire in downtown Raleigh about 3 months ago. I'll be sure to inform him of his fall from grace. He will be crushed. Of course the fact that he actually makes more than I do in a month may help him get over it.

"Beam me up Scotty! No sign of life on this planet!"
