So, this is sort of an offshoot of the Locopops thread in Chapel Hill conversation - we're somewhat still new to the Triangle Area near Southpoint Mall, hence the question.

Are there any old-fashioned ice-cream stands in the area? I mean, not the Baskin Robbins - walk-into-a-store type, the ones that just open for the summer, high-school summer work, post-Little-League soft serve cones, like the ones from our youth type?

(that's probably not a very descriptive rendition of my youth, but a literary career isn't in my future either).

My 2 1/2 year old is getting to that age where it'd be nice to have a family ice-cream outing once in a while.

Cheers...

I don't think I know of anywhere that fits the description you have .. 'cause I don't know anywhere that serves soft-serve except Dairy Queen. Perhaps you are thinking of a Goodberry's type place? It is free-standing, though it is open year-round. Goodberry's Creamery, Inc.

But if I were taking the kids for an ice cream outing, I'd go to Maple View Farms Welcome to Maple View Farm

The Lumpy's cart at the Moore Square Farmer's Market Lumpy's Ice Cream - Just a Scoop away from a smile!

Or the Porter Farms Ice Cream Market NC Pumpkin Patch and Strawberry Farm Picking at Porter Farms Willow Spring NC near Fuquay-Varina, Raleigh, Cary

Going out to Maple View Farm is a fun weekend trip when you have more time but during the week going to their store in Carrboro would be a lot more convenient for you.

Here's a link to a discussion on milkshakes which lead to ice cream not too long ago. Some really great choices out there that'll keep me busy all summer long!

Try Snikroc Farm, they serve softserve ice cream, shakes, sundaes, banana splits. Their farm also has pick your own blueberries from end of June to mid August. 5220 Wake Forest Hwy. (Just East of intersection of Sherron Rd, Patterson Rd and Hwy 98) Its a small trailer in a field, with a couple of picnic tables, simple and delicious.
