Trust me. Ed Mitchell's chopped BBQ, Carolina spare ribs and fried chicken are the best I have ever had. I have grown up in NC and had a lot of chopped BBQ and ribs from all over and these are wonderful.
I also agree Wilson is one of NC's BBQ towns but we have several areas that got great chopped BBQ cooked eastern style.
Bullock's BBQ and Backyard BBQ in Durham
Wilbur's BBQ and McCall's in Goldsboro
Parker's in Wilson and Greenville
The Pit and Coopers BBQ in Raleigh
Moore's BBQ in New Bern
Ed Mitchell had to close down Mitchell's BBQ in Wilson in 2007 because he was convicted on tax evasion charges. The IRS made an example out of him and he didn't have the business sense to get himself out of it. Now, he is partnered with Greg Hatem and Empire Eats on The Pit and its a whole different ball game.
Here is a great article from the N&O when The Pit opened last year:
Return of the pitmaster - Food & Fitness - News & Observer (http://www.newsobserver.com/lifestyles/food_fitness/story/926361.html - broken link)
That's pretty cool. Mitchell and Hatem are really doing a good job at promoting themselves nationally.
I actually ate at Backyard BBQ in Durham today for the first time and was very surprised how good it was. Granted, its nothing fancy to look at but the staff were all pleasant and attentive. The food, specifically the BBQ I had along with the sides was amazing. I believe my plate of Q, collards and mac n cheese put up against a plate with the same food from The Pit would do very well in a blind taste test.
Yesterday, I also forgot to mention B's BBQ in Greenville on my list.
Backyard is real good authentic eastern style cue. Don't forget about Stephenson's down in Willow Spring(the last town in Southern Wake County). They do it right. Skylight Inn and Bum's in Ayden as well. There are so many great joints in eastern North Carolina, it is hard to name them all.
Where is Backyard BBQ located at in Durham? I've never heard of the place and I've been here for 2 years.
