Default Transplants from Texas?

We are considering relocating to Raleigh later this year from the Dallas burbs. I was wondering how different any transplants from Texas find the cost of living. That is my only concern with relocating. I've read the overall cost of living is 7-10% higher in Raleigh compared to Dallas.

Thanks!

Everything else seems to be comparable, except for real estate. Plan on spending 10%-20% more to get a comparable house. On the good side though, real estate taxes are much cheaper and so is homeowners insurance. Oh. . . . and there's that nasty state income tax.

I would love to answer your question but I'm in Austin and don't know squat about Big D.

We're planning on living a little further out to compensate for that. Job will be in RTP and we're looking at Apex, HS, Fuquay and Garner. Any place else we should be looking?

Garner should be OK, but don't let Apex and Holly Springs fool you. Prices in both cities are going up fast, and Holly Springs has high city taxes compared to the other local cities. And expect a 30+ minute commute from Garner and HS. Apex will be a little less.

We did not look at Garner because of the commute time, but we did look at Apex and Holly Springs. We didn't find much in Apex that fit our needs, but really liked some of the houses in the Sunset Ridge subdivision of HS. Also, don't overlook the unincorporated areas of Wake County . . . no city taxes and bigger lots. There are pockets north of Raleigh (north of I540) and south of Raleigh (south of I40) that are nice. We're waiting to close on a house in the south unincorporated area.

We lived in Carrollton (near Rosemeade and Marsh, so it was basically west Plano) for 9 years and just moved here back in July. Where are you coming from?

Ha! I lived in an apartment near the northeast corner of Old Denton and Rosemeade for a while. And before we were married, my wife had a house on the west side of Old Denton in the same area.

Moved out here from Houston a year and a half ago. We love it. The house prices are a little higher, but real estate taxes and insurance are cheaper. Not only is there the state tax (which you get used to) but there is the vehicle tax (which you can claim on your taxes). Any questions ask away.

Hi there,

I grew up in West Plano (close to Carrolton) but have been in the Triangle area since 1991. I grew up in a real estate family(my mom is also in the real estate business and for 30 years). The home prices are more expensive but you save on the property taxes. North Carolina property taxes are a little over 1% although they are going up with the 2008 assessment. Our last assessment was in the year 2000 and that is what current taxes are based on..good deal, eh? On the other hand, NC has a state income taxes which is hard to swallow when you first get here.

Personally I loved Texas but I also like the four seasons in the Triangle. My mom swears they have a fall in Texas but it's not quite like Fall in North Carolina. I did a post a while back on Texas vs. North Carolina..i'll dig it up again and recirculate..it's funny.

Here it is......

Redrover,

I am a native Texan, grew up there, and loved it. I still do. I moved to the Triangle through marriage. I've lived in Chapel Hill and Cary. Both towns are completely different. I love Texas and my entire family still lives there-my parents in Plano and my sister in San Antonio. I spent summers on the East Coast and always liked it. North Carolina is very East Coast and also a little bit southern. What's your preference?

In Texas everything is big..
In North Carolina education and quality of life are more important..
In North Carolina we have four seasons-winter,spring,summer, and fall.
In Texas, you have winter and summer...
In Texas you have great shopping...
In North Carolina you don't...but it's getting better.
In North Carolina you have quick and easy access to the beach and the mountains........with a drive of course...
In Texas you don't..
In Texas you have big hair..
In North Carolina you don't.......
3 Great Universities, great basketball in the Triangle..
In Dallas, you have the Dallas Cowboys......boy do I miss them.
In Texas you have beef barbecue,
In North Carolina you have vinegar based pork barbecue..

Differences aside, the quality of life here is fantastic..PM me and I'll call you back and let you know even more if you'd like..
