I am looking for some ideas on free or very inexpensive things to do in the Triangle. We are willing to drive about 35-40 miles if necessary(we live in Cary) We have infant twins and know no one here so we would be bringing them. Looking for stuff to get us and the babies out of the house on the weekends.

Any ideas?

Hi, Visit the state fairgrounds in Raleigh. It's a big indoors & outdoor market. Plenty of walking and things to see. You can also try some of the parks. You can get out and enjoy the nice weather.

Visit Oakwood Cemetery in downtown Raleigh--in nice weather, it's a gorgeous place to walk around, and there is SO much history there. Many of the gravestones are stunning. One local theatre group even does mini-plays there every now and then to tell the stories of some of the folks buried there.

We love this park in downtown Raleigh. Although it wasn't real close to where we lived, sometimes we would drive down to spend hours there. We have kids of various ages and we have spent many wonderful happy times there-all FREE! Great place to picnic too. And it also has some really inexpensive options like riding the train, carousel, or paddle boats. They are all minimal in price. Hope you enjoy!

Parks and Greenways are always a good choice for free, and the area is blessed with excellent of both. In addition to the already mentioned Pullen Park (note the spelling is wrong above) and Umstead State Park, check out Lake Crabtree, Shelly Lake, Bond Park, Lake Johnson, The American Tobacco Trail, The Black Creek Greenway, White Oak Greenway just for starters. A good combo is the NC Museum of Art combined with the trail that goes over to Meredith College.

I really enjoy free concerts and free festivals in the area. There are other posts from today about the Downtown Raleigh Live concerts. These can get a bit crowded around dark, but are good for the family earlier in the afternoon/evening. Raleigh's Sunday in the Park concerts begin next week at Fred Fletcher Park. We just had Artsplosure. Cary has Lazy Daze each year (as well as Spring Daze). There are local art walks and Raleigh has a great First Friday every month around Artspace/City Market.

There is a LOT more. Recommend picking up the Independent, a local free newspaper, each week as it is one of the best ways to see what is going on.
